IRVING, Texas -- Maybe more than any other player on the roster, the Dallas Cowboys need Doug Free to be the best version of himself, to borrow one of head coach Jason Garrett's coachspeak catchphrases. That version is a good tackle and veteran leader on an offensive line that is expected to be one of the league's best. The other version of Free is a weak link. Which Free will the Cowboys get this season? The answer should play a major part in determining the potency of a Dallas offense that has the potential to be as explosive as any in the NFC.

this to me is bigger than any defense problem we might have. If Free doesnt get it together, then the RB or Witten will be spending time helping him which kills a significant part of our offense. We also cant have him screwing up and getting Tony injured.

even the "best version" of Free is limited, he will need help against any d-lineman better than a JAG. The Cowboys should plan for this and not pretend that Free might be able to handle better players.

I was thinking the same thing.

I would have liked to see a bit better of a backup plan at RT.

It was the game against San Francisco in 2011 where Free's play began to go down a hole after Justin Smith completely abused him, and exposed Free issues with power and grip strength. Hopefully he can hold his own and play better this time around.
