I would love for him to come back next season but regardless I would like to see the Cowboys take a big Guard within the 1st 3 rds of the draft.

From OP:

"Waters said he hoped the team could keep a roster spot for him if his arm improved by the end of the season."

OK, yeah, i did read that, but I missed it at the same time! duh lol

But, I think it would be hard to heal a bicep tear without having surgery if indeed surgery was even an option.

END of the season. Next year.

I think you're right. I looked it up and he is on season-ending IR. The problem is, this other article written today says he doesn't even know if he's going to play next year or retire, and he doesn't even know when he's going to have surgery, so it seems odd he would be talking about holding a roster spot for him next year. Anyway, thanks for the correction.

Normally, I'd be against bringing in a guy his age but he does appear to be a unique individual from a leadership perspective. Even LA didn't impact the o-line in his latter years the way Waters did earlier this season.

I would draft an Olineman and have him on reserve in te event we lose a lineman during the season. It's not like teams are flocking to a 37 yr old coming off IR.

No matter what he said I'd enter the offseason as if he's not coming back.

why has he not had surgery yet? wouldn't he want to fix what was wrong as soon as possible, and heal as soon as possible?

IRVING, Texas – Brian Waters has yet to have surgery on his triceps, but the veteran guard acknowledged he will more than likely go under the knife. Whether or not he has the operation will not factor in a decision to return next year.

“Whatever decision I make is going to be a long, drawn-out process, like it always is,” Waters said.

Waters did not join the Dallas Cowboys until Sept. 4, after about a month of talks with the team. He was a late signee with the New England Patriots in 2010. He did not play in 2011.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has said he would be in favor of Waters returning in 2014.

“I’m just trying to make it through this particular phase of this process and making a decision whether to have surgery or not and figuring out a timeline on that,” Waters said. “Then I’ll worry about that next situation after I go through the rehab and all of that stuff and figure out where I am physically.”

Waters will turn 37 in February. He moved into the Cowboys' starting lineup after three games, and started five games at right guard before suffering a partial tear of his triceps on Oct. 27 against the Detroit Lions.

Waters said he hoped the team could keep a roster spot for him if his arm improved by the end of the season.

“At the time it was definitely best, the team needed as many spots as possible because we were going through a pretty hefty injury situation,” Waters said. “That was ultimately the best decision that was made for the team.”

Leaving the NFL on his terms, and not on injured reserve, will be part of the decision.

In other words, You can be sho I will not return during training camp. I do hope he is back next year at a cap friendly price.

I think we need to draft a guard in the second or third round AND bring him back. 1) So we don't have to rush a rookie into the starting lineup. and 2) So Waters can mentor all the linemen like he did this year, and that is where he is most valueable to this team. Problem is - can they afford to do it ...

Better question - can they afford not to do it?

Brian's nobody's fool -- he's aware it's to his advantage to be noncommittal when considering his options. He'll be in the hunt for another contract next year and revealing his desire to return prematurely would only inhibit his chances to secure a decent contract. Let's also be fully cognizant of his being dreadfully allergic to training camp. We surely wouldn't want to see him break out in a heat rash (or something) now, would we? -- LOL. In any case, drafting another guard in the draft is a no-brainer. Waters is a temporary fix at best. Drafting a promising guard would only be making a prudent decision to ensure continued progress in rebuilding our OL.
