CHICAGO -- To get any sort of success in the passing game, the Dallas Cowboys need to move wide receiver Dez Bryant around. On the season, Bryant has been targeted more times down the middle of the field (51) than any other place.

When the Cowboys move Bryant, not only does he get open more by creating matchup problems, he produces. In the past two weeks, Bryant has 16 catches for 147 yards with one touchdown.

"We've moved him around as we said, [and] we'll continue to move him around," offensive coordinator Bill Callahan said. "He's in every formation and location that you can even think of. I think a couple of games ago, we targeted him 16 times [against New York Giants] and he was in just about every imaginable formation you can think of. We're going to continue to do that not only with Dez but with a couple of other guys as well."

Inserting Bryant at different spots of the line of scrimmage has an affect on other players, too. If Bryant is lined up in the slot, Miles Austin and Terrance Williams can become outside receivers. Tight end Jason Witten can see single coverage when Bryant lines up near him. Defenses can't double Bryant all the time, so they have to put one of their best cornerbacks on him.

I also wish they would put more guys in motion too. Motion is such a vital part to not only surprising the defense with moving a person into another formation quickly, but determines if a defense is in Man on man or zone sometimes, it's just a great way to help get guys into the pattern and open. But, one step at time with this coaching staff.

Yes, and I'm sure he has an editor who almost missed it. It happens...and intelligent readers, such as yourself, knew what he meant.

I would be an awesome editor, but I would be too inclined to do asinine stuff like this:

"Inserting Bryant at different spots of the line of scrimmage has an affect [sic] on other players, too." ha ha

To be sure..

..Dez is going to get double coverage on his first read so Romo has to go to his next progression..

..meaning pass rush gets to Romo.

I think they need to move Tony around too.

Roll him out..spread the field..don't just hunker down and throw from the pocket.

It's a chess game right now..will be until the end of the season.

Whatever you have done up until now..

..you are going to have to do that and more to win.

This team never has understood that.

December is different.

Let's roll.

Never understood why romo rarely rolls out. And if Dez is in the slot I don't think he'll be doubled that much.

bu but I thought I read here he wasnt smart enough for this stuff

There's little doubt that Dez has made strides in his adjustments over the last season and a half. Dez himself has said on multiple occasions that he had trouble with some of the site adjustments asked of him early in the year last season.

The thing about putting Dez in the slot---and I'm in favor of it, no doubt--is that all season we'd been able to play him split out, against the other teams best CB, and teams were still rolling S coverage to him. That gave us a huge matchup advantage in the middle of the field with a WR like Austin, or a player like Wit with what should have amounted to a LB in coverage. Or, in Miles case, they'd want to bring in another coverage player to pass the slot WR off to depending on the route, which should have been another big matchup advantage to us with Murray in the lineup.

It ended up not as much of an advantage as it looked to be on paper, and, as Dez has demonstrated that he can be in the right place on the field regularly finally, we made the overdue move to play him in the slot. Now, I'd like to see us run more pick action to benefit that slot WR. It's a dang shame, too, that we lost Dubar because, with the Dez in the slot clearing out, well, everything, that screen game should have been really effective for us here at the end of the year. Murray can run the screens ok, but he's not the same guy in space on the second level that Dunbar looked to be.

I don't think the coaching staff has reached that step of the "process" yet. But rest assured that it is, in fact, part of the process.

My only response to this is "What took them so damn long?" It is the same with the running game...pressure from outside of the team elicits a correction. These can arguably be seen as common sense adjustments by even the most perfunctory of fans. How is it that coaches can't employ similar observational sense? They need to run like thugs and pass like sages!

IMHO the coaching staff hasn't come close to figuring out to best use Dez.

He doesn't have enough targets, catches, yards, etc. They need find ways to get him the ball more.

More than anything I believe the current system is limiting Dez's big play opportunities. In fact, looking at the current NFL stats:
  • Dez currently ranked 32nd in the NFL in terms of the # of receptions that have gone for 20+ yards (big plays). He only has 10.
  • Here are just some of the luminary WRs ahead of him in the # of 20+ yard receptions category: Chris Givens, Riley Cooper, Brian Hartline, Jerome Simpson, Doug Baldwin, Harry Douglas, Reuben Randal, Anquan Bolden, Antonio Brown

I don't understand this either.

Is it Callahan that is slow to adjust?

Or Garrett that is not making the changes?

Which ever it is..they need to make the change.
