IRVING -- Roy Williams didn't want to talk about his three bruised ribs and whether he will play Sunday at Kansas City.
"I talk on Wednesdays," said a smiling Williams when asked if he was making the trip to Kansas City.
If Williams doesn't play, which is likely, Miles Austin will get his first career start against the Chiefs.
"Yeah, I'm looking forward to it," Austin said after Friday's practice. "I'm looking forward to getting out there playing and helping us win."
The Cowboys' expectations were high this season regarding Austin. During training camp, there was a belief Austin might overtake Patrick Crayton for the starting job because of his ability to stretch the defense with his speed. So far, Austin has five catches for 81 yards and a touchdown this season.
Coach Wade Phillips said Austin's route running has improved, and he needs to seize this opportunity to play well.
"I feel like I've been going decent so far besides losing two games," Austin said. "I wish we were 4-0, but what are you going to do?"
Austin could have a busy Sunday because he's also the kick returner. The Cowboys have practiced several players at that position, including cornerback Orlando Scandrick, in case Austin can't do both.

Buehler ready for role to expand

Rookie fifth-rounder David Buehler expects to get on the field in a role other than kickoff specialist Sunday in Kansas City.
Injuries opened up a spot on the punt return team for Buehler, whose combine workout numbers compared favorably with most linebackers. This would be his first special teams action other than kicking off since the preseason opener in Oakland.
"I'm ready to get in there," said Buehler, who lines up in different spots depending on the play call. "It's not too grueling to block a guy running down the field. Hopefully, I get my job done."
While Buehler is willing to do the dirty work, he had a vision of glory as he was walking out of the locker room.
"I might pull a Holley," Buehler said with a big smile, referring to reality-show winner Jesse Holley's wild touchdown return of a punt during the preseason finale. "Who knows?"
