Ravens cut Bryan McCann; Cowboys interested

IRVING, Texas -- Cornerback Bryan McCann was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, and the Cowboys have some interest.

The Cowboys have three cornerbacks on their roster and will use rookie Akwasi Owusu-Ansah at corner if necessary.

If the Cowboys can claim McCann off waivers, they'd have to cut someone on the active roster.

Fullback Deon Anderson and linebacker Jason Williams are possible candidates. Anderson wasn't allowed to practice on Wednesday with a knee injury, and Williams, last year's third-round pick, has struggled in the limited time he has played.

How about considering a cut of Church.

I mean, where else can you possibly get a 4.6++ SS/LB.

Barry Church is the type of player who will have DeMarcus Ware covering TEs. Is Church fast enough to cover one-one-one in the intermediate and deep 1/3 of the field? Can he do Sensabaugh's job?

Can he play nickel LB for a coach that doesn't like playing rookies to begin with?

I don't get the Cowboys' love for a guy who runs a 4.6++ and played in the poor man's Big Ten.

It seems like those guys should be a dime a dozen.

I'd be happy to sign him to the PS, but see no reason to waste a roster spot on the guy now.

No team liked Barry Church's forty yard dash time, that's why a four-time all conference selection went undrafted.

Church plays faster than he times as lots of players do.

He earned a roster spot with his play on the football field in training camp and pre-season.

There were some people within the organization who didn’t want to see Bryan McCann get released, especially considering some of the players who were kept on the 53-man roster instead.

So you wonder if those people are going to voice their opinions even louder now that McCann, who was claimed off waivers last week by the Ravens, was cut by Baltimore on Wednesday.

McCann, an undrafted rookie from SMU, is still pretty raw when it comes to playing NFL cornerback. But he’s got something going for him – speed! The kid can run and has really good athleticism....

Rob: They're still developing guys like Sean Lee and Jason Williams, and I still think Lee helps there at some point. Right now both are expected to contribute on special teams. Leon Williams? That's a different story. He made the team, too, but can't help if he's inactive most weeks.

Nick: That's a good question and one that is hard to answer after just one game. We figured Leon Williams would be active for the games if he made the team, but yet he was inactive for the first one. Still, it comes down to Sean Lee and Jason Williams. You've got a third-round pick from two years ago, and a second-round pick (supposedely with first-round talent) from this year. You'd think they would be ready for at least the nickel. That has to be labeled an early-season disappointment right now.

Josh: They had to keep an extra guy, Leon Williams, because Sean Lee and Jason Williams apparently weren't ready. That's what makes the fact he didn't dress last week so surprising. Why would you hang onto a 27-year-old who played in the UFL last year over a younger player with some promise, like, say, the cornerback Bryan McCann? And now Lee is hurt again. They've got to work something out, otherwise Brooking won't be the same player in the second half.
