Dallas CowboysRecord: 6-10
Needs: DE, OT, S, ILB, CB

Tyron Smith, OT, USC

Scenario 1: Assuming the Cowboys are unable to trade back, they would do well to take the top offensive lineman on the board to fill a primary need. Smith has a lot of upside, and while some teams are turned off by the fact that he played only at right tackle in college, that's exactly where Dallas would pencil him in.

Scenario 2: This is another spot where a trade with St. Louis is possible, and moving back to No. 14 would allow the Cowboys to still get one of the top three offensive tackles on the board (Smith, Boston College's Anthony Castonzo, Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi).

Scenario 3: Dallas could fill a need on defense with Amukamara or Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt.

I'm liking scenario #2 for sure.

I like Gabe, but for some reason he just doesn't scream top 15 pick to me.

I think Sherrod will be better overall tackle in the long run than either Carimi or Constanzo. I just think he needs a year or maybe two of polish before he will become a staple on some teams offensive line.

I think Sherrod has a better chance of being able to play the left side compared to Carimi or Canstonzo as well. And he should be there in the bottom of the first. I still think we should take Quinn if available then trade back into the first for Sherrod.

ideally i'd like tyron smith but would be very happy with moving back and taking Castonzo at 14. If we move back to 17/18 it may be Carimi, and i'd be just ok with that

Sherrod didn't strike me as being particularly impressive, and he's not a power guy either, so I'd think he's strictly LT.

I am in the minority but I rate Smith as the 4th best tackle in this class. I have Castonzo, Carimi, Solder, Smith and Sherrod. I prefer Carimi over Castonzo but knocked Carimi down because Castonzo has a better chance of playing LT imo. I have Solder rated higher than Smith because I believe he has a higher ceiling and performed just as well at LT as Smith at RT, but both are rated low because it just seems like their guy always makes the play either in the run or pass and they frequently end up on the ground. I haven't seen enough of Sherrod to form a solid opinion but he seems to have a nasty streak similar to Carimi.

Last year I had Okung, Saffold, Williams, Bulaga and Davis as my top 5. If both draft classes came out the same year, Davis would be #10. I just don't like Davis. Okung is clearly the best, I only remember him giving up one bad play and that came on an all out blitz that he should have taken the inside guy.

If I had to rate all of them together, I would have Okung, Saffold/Castonzo, Carimi, Williams, Solder, Smith, Bulaga, Sherrod and Davis. But like I said, I am in the minority.

Sherrod a high value pick

I have said earlier that Derek Sherrod is the best value pick all of the offensive tackle prospects. Sherrod was a three year starter at Mississippi State and served as team captain.

During those 35 college games, he showed that he plays with a lot more finesse than he does power. He plays with good overall balance and slides his feet well while engaged in a block.
He is a positional run blocker who seals his man more often than he does drive him off the ball, but where Sherrod will make his money is in pass protection. He has great quickness in his pass set and rarely is beaten by a speed rush off the edge. HIs uses his lower body well to keep a firm base and a heavy inside leg.

Because the NFL is becoming such a pass oriented league, Sherrod's finesse play and superior pass protection will be a valuable commodity. I see him as late first-round to early second-round selection who will be a great fit for a pass first offensive system.

Carimi's is best run blocker

Wisconsin's Gabe Carimi is a totally different prospect than Sherrod. While I just described how Sherrod is a finesse player who uses body position and quick feet to secure his opponent, Carimi uses raw power and a nasty streak to hold his defender at bay.

Carimi measures in at 6-foot-7 and 314 pounds with 35-inch arms. He bench pressed 225 pounds 29 times and jumped a 31.5-inch vertical. Those numbers are very similar to his top tackle prospect peers, but what isn't similar, is his aggressive and nasty style of play

Because of this style of play, I believe him to be a better right tackle than left. Some clubs are even considering him as an interior lineman to take better advantage of his skill set. No matter where he plays on the line, he is the best run blocker available in the draft

So I am happy with any of them just as long as its not Solder

That's inline with my opinion on the tackles, Carimi is the only tackle I've seen who has a consistent, strong punch.

I like Carimi but Smith offers LT potential and could slide there if Free is hurt. Carimi is a monster run blocker but might struggle against speed rushers in the NFL and I don't think he is athletic enough to play LT in a pinch.

Mike Mayock moved Tyron Smith into the number 10 slot in his top 10.

Castonzo is down to number 16.

He looks, in terms of his play, like a player on the continuum of Winston Justice, Branden Albert and Brian Bulaga, with the advantage of a lot more tape and a higher degree of confidence at that right tackle position.

It's a fair range, and you never know, but I'll take a minimum B- player with the potential to be an A- player at 15.

The track record for "athletic" tackles with "upside" is very, very spotty. If I were Jerry, I'd take Carimi at 14, give Stephen a gentlemanly handshake and move on to the second round.

I like scenario 2, but I'd rather take him and be sure that we got him than trade back behind Detroit, who is also said to like Smith, and lose out, and then do the Jerry Jones slide down the draft board loading up on 6th rounders.

Oh come on man. Enjoy it.

You wont get anything meaningful until late July if we're lucky.

It'd be fun to trade down and still land Watt, Prince or Smith.

That's exactly what I was thinking the other day. We should be happy we get to do all this draft speculation because it may be the last NFL related thing we have to look forward to for months.
