Broaddus has decided that man coverage in one on one drills early in camp is how we should evaluate Wilcox. Twitter, various mailbags, talk shows and the board are inundated with doubting on him now.

I dunno about that. Last year they didn't put their S in man coverage very often but when they did it was almost always Wilcox and not Church. He did okay at it. He won some he lost some. He had the vast majority of his snaps playing as the deep middle though. The big problem I had with Wilcox's play last year was the pursuit angles he took coming up and overrunning the play outside. In the scrimmage, the offense tried running those types of games outside and he was meeting Joseph and Johnson at the edge.

Last year we were good at containing the deep ball with Wilcox as our FS. He gave up a throw against GB but people seem to forget he was all over the field against Detroit and for the year our long pass numbers were much improved. Towards the end of the year I thought he was doing a better job driving on throws with anticipation and making plays.

I heard about his foot problem in the Spring and didn't notice any problem with his stride. I don't get the angst.

Im guessing our 3rd down defense will look much different than last years defenses.

I like JJ and Church but I don't feel like they compliment each other as a tandem.

I want a true centerfielder but the Cowboys want 2 in the box guys for some reason. Maybe Byron Jones changes that.

Think he is a SS.

Byron Jones might be the next Woodson but I want to at least see him come down and fill a hole in run defense. I am not buying that White is anything other than a nickel or dime safety unless he makes a significant improvement in physicality coming here.

Wilcox is a 4.5 guy and in an ideal world you have a 4.4 guy that can cover more of the field. I get that and I also get that with the depth a corner Jones' best chance to start is at FS and he can run extremely well. That doesn't mean that Wilcox at FS wasn't able to tackle well, take away the deep throw, and start driving on some throws last season.

I've got no angst towards Wilcox, I just think that Byron Jones has a better chance to be a ball hawking FS who can generate turnovers for our D. If he's given the chance to sit out there and play centerfield I think Jones will be able to make plays that Wilcox just physically can't, and I want the best guys on the field. I kind of feel like Church and Wilcox are the same type of player, and neither of them is what I want in a FS.

Now I don't know if Jones will be better than Wilcox in September, but if he is, or if it's close, I would prefer to have Jones out there.

Broaddus is king of the false narrative.

He probably saw Wilcox grabbing once maybe twice. I don't remember Wilcox being called for holding last year.

I think all the DBs may be playing more physically. I would think it would be a good thing. Works for the seahawks.

My evaluation: let White or Jones be the FS cause we are stacked at CB and then let Wilcox and Church take turns at SS depending on if it's a passing or running down.

I tend to lean that way to, but keep in mind that leaves us very thin at CB next year. Looking at a secondary of

CB- Orlando Scandrick, Tyler Patmon
CB- ???, Corey White, ???
FS- Byron Jones, Jeff Heath
SS- JJ Wilcox, Barry Church

Almost means we need to sign a vet or draft one very early again.

They all appear to be playing very physically in TC. It would only happen to such an extent if the coaches are pushing them to do it.

Over the years listening to him talk about secondary players like Sensabaugh, Heath, Wilcox, Ball, etc, I don't think he understands the technical side of players in space. He talks about whether or not the can 'carry someone up the field,' 'be physical on the press,' and stuff like that but you don't hear him talking about the steps, hand placement, or zone techniques like exchanges and drop adjustments.

He talks more in depth about the inline stuff because that is what he knows. He will talk about lineman's steps, hand placement, pass rush techniques, stance and make a whole lot of sense.

Wilcox is SS. He plays better going downhill. However he has a little more range than Church which is why we've seen bigger plays from Wilcox.

His biggest problem last year was guys like Bruce Carter not playing within the scheme and not re-directing runners in the correct direction as required in the scheme.

talking about in the passing game

I like Wilcox, biggest thing he needs to improve on is the angles he takes in space. That doesnt really have much to do with being a FS or SS imo he has the ability to play either.

Wilcox can play deep middle. I don't think Church can. I don't know that either are particularly suited to buzz inside routes and man those intermediate zones. Sean Lee at will should be awesome on the other side.

A RB still learning how to play safety.

His only advantage is that he has the most athleticism among the "safeties" we have on the roster.
