Since our earlier grading of the 2003 draft shows it was pretty good, I thought I'd take a look at our 2004 draft. What kind you say about a draft where first pick and 3 7th round picks were the best & rest no longer on team. Here we go:

1. RB Julius Jones (shares role w/Marion Barber III
2. OT Jacob Rogers (cut)
3. OG Stephen Peterman (cut)

2nd day:
CB Thornton (moved on to SF)
TE Sean Tyan (IR?)
7th rounder: CB Nathan Jones (#5th on depth chart)
WR Patrick Crayton (good WR; #3 on depth chart)
CB Jacque Reeves (#4 on depth chart)

Sorry I don't recall which undrafted free agents we signed that year.

Jones is doing okay but thank goodness for Barber; would like to see a few more long runs by Jones like we used to see in his rookie year.
Crayton is frankly the best of the lot; a good #3, maybe could be a legit #2 possession WR.
Reeves developed pretty good in 05 when Henry got hurt but don't know his potential as possible starter; same goes for Jones who is a good ST. Think Jones is vulnerable if we select a CB in the draft.

At time of draft, our first day picks were given a C+ and 2nd day picks got a C-.

i think you have to throw spears into it as well, but considering his play. not that great. still JJ + Spears > Steven jackson

those OL guys are huge busts. looking at what was available at T. gallery went 1st. could've had max starks or sean locklear though

We already new we missed in this draft. We are just now recovering from it. Colombo is making up for the puss Rogers and a first day or free agent Guard is probably heading our way this year to make up for Peterman if none of the recent additions step up.

I was upset with this draft. :bang2: I was upset that we passed on S Jackson and K Jones. Even moreso when Rogers and Peterman busted. Even the day of the draft I was wondering WTH we were doing using a 2nd on a guy with a long history of shoulder surgeries and injuries.
I think this was the year/draft I wanted us to take Nathan Vasher in the late second. He could've saved us Henry's contract or at least returned punts.
Then we pass on him and take a CB (Thorton) whom I knew wasn't going to make it :banghead:
We really haven't gotten good value from this draft other than JJ and Crayton. Crayton and Reeves were big steals but don't make up for busting with 2 picks on the first day. I liked Michael Turner late too.

Overall, I think the 2004 draft is proving to be...not all that great..(at least after the first round)..not just for us but across the league.
