Reid Situation Is A Double Standard
Written by Garry Cobb Friday, 02 November 2007 It's very obvious that a double standard is taking place here with the media and the legal system in the Andy Reid situation. He's had admitted drug dealing going on from his home with drugs and guns available throughout the home.

Allen Iverson had a helicopter over his house for a few weeks during the break in and his court case.Terrell Owens was on the front page day after day and had helicopters over his house. With both of these cases nobody really knew all that was going on but that didn't stop every media person in the area from offering their opinion. Now everybody is dealing with this with kid gloves.

No longer does this situation just involve Andy's kids because the judge singled out Andy's house and his control of that home. This is without a doubt a double standard. The same media type who had no problem talling Donovan McNabb that he should tell his parents to shut up, but they don't want to offer an opinion on Andy and his out of control, drug dealing sons. Wilma writing that it was bittersweet to have her son hurt while the team was going on a winning streak was major news and criticized by nearly all of the local media.

If a player had his home singled out as a drug emporium, with drugs and guns available they would not be playing football. At the least they would have to miss some games and in all likelihood they would be suspended. I counsel kids at the Youth Study Center who spend years in jail for doing far less than the Reid boys have admitted to. Garrett Reid admitted to being a drug dealer yet he's being treated like a kid with a drug problem. There are mandatory sentences for drug dealers. The court system and the media in Philadelphia would be going crazy if this situation had involved the Iverson family, Owens family or McNabb family. There's an obvious difference about the way things are covered depending on who the violiator happens to be.

From Leon, I couldn't agree with you more G about the Double Standard Issue with the media. You can even look at the over exposure of Austin Scott. With all the guns, drugs & steroids going through the Reid house, hes lucky Roget Goddell isn't looking into this matter. Also,Coach Reid is lucky his son Britt never got shot or killed with the murder rate in this city.

You mean double standards exist in America?

Newsflash: double standards have existed since the beginning of time and human relationships.

Tyke, I can understand why the players are frustrated though. Look at the media storm around the suspended guys this year. Then you see the minor slap on Belicheck's wrist with the evidence being destroyed and now this.

It doesn't look very balanced to me and I am a "fan" of Andy Reid as a person and as a coach.

Fair enough.

I do see some differences, but I understand your point.

Of course there are differences. I doubt there are very many identical instances of anything.

I guess just ask it like this. If a player's home were described as a "drug emporium" by a judge, would he be invited to NY to see Goodell? Yet Reid isn't going to be.

On top of this the only coach really punished this year has been Wade Wilson. It doesn't look right.

IMO the difference is that Reid's kids were involved and this is a family issue.

In the other incidents, it was always the athlete himself who was caught up in the illegal acts, or the detrimental conduct.

People feel sorry for Reid because it's clear his family has problems... not so clear that he's part of it. If HE were the one with the issues, then it'd be easier for the league and public to come down on him. They're worried about doing it now necause it seems like kicking a man while he's down... and not because of something he did (directly).

not saying it's right or wrong, but that's why i think the standard is different.

#1, What do you mean Eagles Gary Cobb? Does he still play? LOL. Played for us & Det too. Who cares what Gary Cobb thinks! LOL. Is he the authority? He is a nobody media guy like the rest of you trying to prosecute based on media snipets.

#2, some evidence that Reid himself did anything to brake a law or rules may help. A judges comments do not constitute evidence.

#3, is parenting within the NFL guidelines?

#4, only legal guns and prescription meds were found in the home. Why do you keep glazing over that fact? He should be what, suspended for that? LOL.

#5, this could have been put in the other threads on this topic.

#6, so whats the reason this non winning obscure coach on a crappy team is getting special treatment?

If I didn't know better I would think this witch hunt is another double standard.

"Aiello also said an NFL player in the same situation would be treated similarly.

"It has to do with the individual," Aiello said, "not someone associated [with the individual], or grown children. The issue is NFL personnel. NFL employees are held accountable for violations of the law.""
