I actually think they clipped the ends off. If you look closely 5 of the toothpicks have no pointy end at all and 5 have 1 pointy end. The pointy ends are the ones that move at first and then the all spread out.

Looks like five toothpicks that have one sharp end and one dull end. Each pick looks to be broken in the middle, but not separated completely. Not sure, though. cool trick.
