Even most of the all time great coaches like Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Don Shula and Bill Walsh had expiration dates. Each of the aforementioned HOFers won multiple SBs yet either realized themselves (or with help in TL’s case) that their time with a team was up.
As Jason Garrett closes his 8th season as HC of the Cowboys, his teams have made the playoffs only 3 times including this year, yet going into this year’s playoffs, still has only one wild card round playoff win.
These playoffs should be an acid test of Garrett as a HC here. 100% of this roster are his players. He has been seated next to Emperor Jones for each draft since 2010. To use a Parcells quote, Garrett has “bought the groceries”. Now it’s time to cook or get out of the kitchen.
In other words, winning at least two playoff games, advancing this team to the NFC championship game, a place this team hasn’t been since Jan, 1996 should be the bottom line final exam for Garrett.
Why? Because playoff wins are the measuring stick of a winning organization. A “one and done” or even another wild card round win represents no progress in the last 23 seasons. To bring Garrett back after no progress would reveal this team to simply be a treadmill organization designed to make money, “be relevant” at season’s end but without any hardware to show for it. To me, that’s unacceptable.
In short, Jason Garrett’s milk carton will have an expired expiration date if he does not take this team further than it’s been since they played Green Bay for the NFC championship in Jan 1996. So long ago Jason Garrett was actually on the roster.
