if you check other team boards they are all saying the same thing about who the team will go after in FA and the problem is the second teir FA who everyone thinks can be had 'cheap' wind up being pricey...we had this happen to us last year with Kosier who was not supposed to command big bucks but look what happened. ... similar experiences happened to lots of other teams too......and I have not seen one player yet give their current team a 'discount' for resigning them to another contract to stay with that team...Gurode and Columbo will probably cost us a fortune when we resign them..
for today's players in the NFL, "money talks and @#$%% walks" as they say

Heh...there's probably a pretty large disconnect between what we fans are targeting and what the owners are after. Personally, I think the only place we might go after a name guy is at RG - OR, we might pull another Kosier, which did work out great, and get a mid-level guy who may have shown promise on a crappy team, or maybe just doesn't fit their blocking scheme.

It's a great year to be a FA, though. Lots of teams have LOTS of available cap space. Some corners are gonna get crazy rich soon.

Cooper Carlisle is a potential Kosier-like FA signing at guard.

You're a mind reader.

I was JUST looking at him, and some stuff. He is 30, I think, but he's only started for two years, and kind of fits the mold we're trying to fill here.

But the fact is we are not going to be aggessive in the FA market-- The folks that expect us to sign a guard, fs, corner and an edge rusher-- all out of this FA class are dreaming.

That is why we need to be ready to move on players other teams release. A guy like Ken Lucas probably gets released, I would pounce on him immediately.

Seriously. I don't expect to sign a single guy I've ever heard of.

Nor do I see the reason - we have all the talent a team needs. Talent isn't the problem here.

As long as he doesn't have a birthday before he is signed because I amn 99% against signing anyone over 30. The 1% left is for special circumstance.

Like I said, he's only started for two years, he plays a position that lends itself to longevity, and he hasn't taken a beating. Steinbach is the preference, Carlisle would be plan B - not a bad plan B, I don't think.

I don't subscribe to the idea we have all this talent and that it was poor coaching by our coaching staff which lead to poor defensive play. I do think we have a lot of talent, some of which didn't produce as expected for whatever reason. But I do believe the first problem which must be solved is at RG and that's where we will spend FA money. Also think we probably re-sign Gramatica even tho Josh Brown of Seattle is a FA; believe Seattle will resign him. Also hope we re-sign Gurode cause we can't afford not to; same goes for Colombo cause whose better out there and plus last year was his first starting season even; he will get even better this year where he can build strength instead of focusing on rehab.

Yeah, I can see us signing maybe one "name" guy, but no more. I think Dielman is a reasonable hope given the Phillips connection and SD's team falling apart. Most of the other guys, the original poster is right: Every team in the league, or half of them, want the same players. And it's proven that it's almost never a smart use of resources to win a bidding war for the highest-priced guys.

As far as Carlisle goes, I'd be a little wary of those Denver cut-blocking guys. Isn't that a concern for you guys?

Ahhh, but is that mold gonna stay the same, or will we go back to a bigger, more physical offensive line like in the good ol' days??

Why would that be a concern? Think they're one-trick ponies? I'm sure we could axe him to stop doing it. ;)

Please remember that Jerry Jones said on the cowboys year in review show that he is only going to bring in players from now on that go right on the field and play. He also echoed this with the first day of the draft saying he only is interested in guys that will come in and play right away.

So if we think hard that should tell us all we need to know about free agency and the draft.

what will probably happen to guys like Cooper and Carlos Polk, like all the other second level FA's that are flying under the radar, there will probably be 5 other teams viewing it the same way and will bid for their services and than they all become very overpaid second tier players when the dust settles

Very true. Lots of cap money available this year. Players will be overpaid.

A little. It wouldn't be my favorite signing, but it is something I could see happening. Fits the mold of the more mobile, athletic interior linemen that the team has been pursuing.

I hope not. An offensive line needs continuity. The worst way to make the line better is by mish mashing styles together. Signing a guy like Leonard Davis (a potential underachiever) would be a mistake IMO.

The offensive line coach is likely the same, so I'd hope the philosophy doesn't change.

He had a really bad year, not sure he's worth it anymore..

I don't expect any major signings either - especially along the OL. I just can't see Jerry spending significant money on a guard for the third year in a row.

I think it's more likely that Dallas locks up Gurode, tries to resign Columbo, and then looks for some quality depth signings and tries to draft more youth to develop.
