Everyone seems OK with the loss... Im not

Were you a fan in 1991?
The thing about the 1991 team is that the Cowboys were growing as a team. That was the first year that the team made the playoffs so it was easier to take. This team has been together for awhile. Two years ago they were 13-3. It would just be nice that if they lose, it would at least be a competitive game.

I guess I missed the posts, granted I haven't read them all, where anyone said they were Ok with the loss.

Have you read, well we had a good season, we won a playoff game, so we'll just do it next year????? That's being OK with the loss. That's a sentiment going around that I don't agree with. I believe this team has too much talent to be handled like that which raises all sorts of redflags.

I always find it entertaining when people who sit at home with a jar of vasoline watching Roger Stabach re-runs take so much liberty with other peoples jobs and livelihoods.

Todays fans are way over the top with their self importance. Sit in the locker room with any coach on that staff and you would be humbled with how much they know about this game. But put some bozo behind a keyboard, and all of a sudden he is master of his universe. lol Forget the families, and hours of stress and effort put forth by team members and coaches...off with their heads becauseI (the KING of my keyboard!) says so!

Seriously, yesterday was VERY disappointing. But the season was not a disaster by any means and there is plenty to continue to build on here. No team in the league wins at Minny yesterday...none.

The 1991 team wasn't close to the 1992-95 teams, either.

Apples and oranges.

The team coached by Johnson continually made progress.

That is NOT the case here.

Those were very different times and to try to draw a comparison between that team and this one is kinda silly.

If anything, this team is more like the teams of the late 60's. That's a comparison I can accept.

Nobody said the season was a disaster, In fact it was good season. What was said is we were destroyed yesterday, blown out and it's not OK as you are putting it. In fact your attitude is the reason for the post. All is not OK when you lose "in this fashion". Not to me anyway.

We did not make progress this year?

Wow

Really?

I'm not "OK" with the loss, but I do think the team moved forward this season. I haven't read your previous positons, but maybe you already wanted big change before this one single game was played. If so, that's your opinion....that's one reason why they have forums in the first place to let us vent a little I suppose.

I thought "heads rolled" pretty well last season, but now I think this team has a foundation to build on...but still have some building to do.

I'm not happy with the loss at all but I'm damn PROUD of this team and the season they put together. They got beat on the road in the playoffs by a better team. This team is close knit and played well together all season. They faught hard and got that playoff gorilla off their backs. They are fairly young and extremely talented. Like any other team, we have to make moves in the offseason to get better. I'm looking forward to next year already...

This team made a ton of progress.

Who here would have bet this team would close the season with four straight essentially must win games, win the NFC East and advance to the second round losing in no small part due to the injury of a player who was considered to be THE key to the Cowboys success by many "experts"?

Anyone?

Awesome freaking post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And ditto! Took the words right out of my mouth!

Thanks, glad you liked it. I hope we make some positive changes.

I will have to admit I'm happy with the season. Yep it was a crusher but they improved a lot this season. That win in New Orleans was top notch and they got the playoff monkey off their backs. Yeah so they folded the tents against Minny and it was sucky to say the least. But they are making strides and with another couple of good additions can jump the next hurdle.

Going forward is a good thing. Having some hope is also a good thing. They exceeded my expectations for the year. I'll take it because I actually see them turning the corner.

Watching the Cowboys in 1991 you knew something special was brewing after that Chicago playoff win with Emmitt, Aikman and Irvin,

And Romo, Felix, and Miles did not look special last week?

I said, that the Johnson coached teams made "continual" progress.

No, I would not call, 13-3...then a home playoff loss...then a 9-7 season with two poor performances to end the season...then this year "continual" progress.

Yes, we made progress this year. I didn't say we didn't

The Johnson coached teams were upward trend each year over the prior year...that's what I meant by "continual"

Like I said earlier, the 1991 team was far from great, and it ended the season in a blowout embarrassment. This year's team probably would have beaten that team handily if they had met in the playoffs.

Even though that team lost 38-6 in the playoffs, it came back the next season, added A LOT of players and took another step forward. There's no reason this year's team can't take another step forward next season, too. We have a lot of great players in their prime and a lot of young guys on the verge of becoming stars or who just became stars (Austin, Felix, Jenkins and Spencer, to name a few). How good can we be if those guys play all next season like they did in the second half of this season? Good enough to compete for the Super Bowl? Of course we could. The Saints were a last-place team one year ago, and now they're hosting the NFC title game. The Vikings went 10-6 and lost their wild-card game by double digits. The Colts didn't win their division, then lost their wild-card game. The Jets didn't even make the playoffs. None of those teams last year were closer to competing for a Super Bowl than we are today, but they all took a big step forward this year. We did, too, and now we need to take another one next year.
The difference between this year's team and the 91 & 92 teams is the draft classes behind those two seasons. We had the best drafts in the Jimmy era in those 2 years. We had one of the worst draft class in the post Parcells tenure this year. Unless we score an A in the upcoming draft we will not compare favorably to those teams. We had a great draft in '08 followed by the worst draft class since '95 in '09. Let's hope 09 was an aberration draft-wise and find some difference makers (especially at receiver for crying out loud. what a difference having good receivers makes for a QB. just ask favre)

Like I said earlier in this thread, I don't consider this team to be the same team from two years ago, and I do think we're still growing as a team. If you make a list of our seven or eight best players going into next season, just about every single one of them is young and improving. Only Witten and maybe Ware were playing at the same level just two seasons ago, and they're both just 27 years old (I put a maybe for Ware because I think he's better overall now, even though his sack numbers were down a little). Romo is much better now. Ratliff is better now. Austin, Jenkins, Spencer and Felix either weren't on the team in 2007 or barely even played. Now they're all playing at a Pro Bowl level or close to it. The only area where we're basically the same as 2007 and might need to make a couple of changes is on the offensive line, but most of them are still capable of playing at a high level (yesterday's game notwithstanding).

The improvement doesn't have to come from rookies, it can come from young players already on the team or from players added through free agency and the draft. (As it did, in large part, for the 1992 team.)

You said this year's draft class was bad, yet we were a much better team this season than we were last year. Why was that? Not because of the draft, rather because of guys already on the team (Austin, Spencer, Jenkins, Felix, Kosier, McBriar) or the addition of veterans (Brooking, Olshansky). Regardless of the 2010 draft, we could take another step forward next year if guys already on the team or added through free agency make a similar impact.

I disagree. You see the Vikings rookies contributing this year. In 1992 we had a bunch of rookies and second year guys starting and contributing. I just don't see the class of 2009 starting or playing a major role next year. We better nail the class of 2010 to go with the great class of 2008.

I hear you AsklesKo, the sentiment seems like this: Well we won 4 games in a row ya know, and we won a playoff game ya know, and the blowout is the like the '91 game vs Detroit ,so I'm OK with the loss. We'll just retool and win it next year.

Ugh, that is dangerous, dangerous thinking. My gloomy opinion is that it only gets worse from here. Sure, progress has been made, but nothing has been fixed. Incompetence still rules the day. Our Boys still come up small when they need to come up big. Too bad, too. I hate losing, and I hate even more waiting another year. I absolutely hate it. But what good will it do trying to change it? None.
