EDMONTON - Edmonton Eskimos receiver Jason Tucker underwent neck surgery late Saturday and is recovering in hospital.

The Esks' all-star receiver suffered a fractured and dislocated vertebrae after colliding with Tiger-Cats defensive back Jykine Bradley in Edmonton's 19-13 win Saturday in Hamilton.

Tucker, 32, was placed on a backboard and then transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he underwent the surgery. On the field, Tucker said he was experiencing high neck and back pain and tingling in his right hand, but had full range of motion in all limbs.

"The operation went very well and Jason is resting comfortably. He'll have to undergo further tests and it's hoped he can return to Edmonton by the end of the week," said team president Rick LeLacheur, who has stayed with Tucker in Hamilton.

A sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1998, Tucker is in his seventh season with the Eskimos.

He appeared in one exhibition game with the Bengals and after suffering a hamstring ailment, reached an injury settlement. He spent time with the Green Bay Packers on their practice roster later that season.

Tucker suited up for the Dallas Cowboys in 1999 after spending time with the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe. However, he was released prior to the 2001 campaign.

He has been part of two Grey Cup-winning teams in Edmonton (2003, '05) and was named the game MVP in 2003.

He was another example of camp greatness never translating to the regular season.

God bless, here's to a speedy recovery.

Some of you people amaze me, how about wishing the guy well instead of saying "he was a bum"...

It takes things like this to sometimes put football in perspective. It is a violent game that sometimes has tragic results. Here's hoping he fully recovers.

I remember that game. He took a five yard stop for 90 yards after the CB slipped.

It was his shining moment and had me thinking we found a diamond in the rough?

I remember that. I kept thinking to myself "Nice. We finally got someone with some wheels!". IIRC He's the cousin of comedian Chris Tucker. I remember seeing Chris Tucker with Cowboys "Tucker" jersey on tv. I think someone asked him about it and he confirmed that the current Dallas player was a relative.

peck and others are right: thank god the guy is OK. He'll be able to walk away from football healthy: that's all that really counts here.
