Ex-Cowboys dominate UFL draft
June 22, 2009 6:20 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Missed you guys at the United Football League draft party the other night. Things got a little wild in the first round, but for the most part, the Beast UFL Mock Draft held up pretty well. If you don't know how the UFL draft works, we're in the same boat.

From what I understand, the teams drafted players who are no longer on NFL rosters. There were 96 players taken in the draft -- and at least six or seven that will sound vaguely familiar. The draft served as a "showcase" for former Cowboys. Last year's third-string quarterback (until we saw Brad Johnson play), Brooks Bollinger was taken by the Orlando team.

And former sixth-round pick Rob Petitti, who once started 15 games for the Cowboys, also ended up with Orlando -- as did former training camp favorite Ronnie Cruz. Former Cowboys running back Tyson Thompson, one of the greatest high school backs I've ever seen in person, ended up with Las Vegas.

The teams will wait for players to be released during NFL training camps to fill out their rosters. And the six-game schedule will begin this fall. Is it just me or does this seem like a can't-miss project?

I love the idea of another league that has some ties to the NFL joining the sports world. I just wish that they'd play the games in the off-season so there'd be something to look forward to after the NFL season concludes.

I just don't see this thing lasting more than two seasons. I hope I'm wrong.

I think I'm seriously going to root for the team Petitti's on. As bad as he was, I really liked him.

Root for Rob, pray for Brooks.

... yeah, it'd be nice to see Tyson Thompson break some runs.

Not sure if this is something to be proud of, alot of the guys we have drafted or picked up arent even in the league anymore.

I don't mind another league, at all, but i don't see how it's going to do well running it's season at the same time as the NFL one. I think this thing is doomed to failure before it even starts for that reason alone.

I agree that this league likely won't last, especially when going up against ESPN's college football games. If this league starts to fail, I hope they switch to some gimmicky rules before folding.

Fundamental changes like a 20 x 200 yard field, 6 plays to gain 20 yards for a first down, 15 players on the field, 7 eligible receivers, etc. Crap like that. I want to see the type of strategy that would develop in play calling and defenses under random rules like that.

Im not for sure but I heard there playing on Thursdays. Why not Tuesdays? Thats the day of the week most open for another football league. Include Wed day too. Thursday is college football, Friday is high school, Sat is College Sun and Mon is NFL. They have a chance here just so they work with the NFL and not against it.. Heres some ideas

1. Do not play in big stadiums. The worst thing in the world is to see 40000 seats empty. Play at a nice D2 school, on their football fields and play in front of 10000 screaming fans to start.

2. Dont change any NFL rules besides celebrations. Give a little more lee way to end zone dances.

3. Get some good announcers without anyone overpromoting or underpromoting their league.

4. Have two sets of practice squads in the NFL. One, for your scout team and two, the ones you send to the UFL.

5. Change the name. UFL sounds like an old scool antenna televison channel.

So tell me how you would fit a 200-yard field in ANY stadium in the country?

No kidding this should have been a spring league. I need a football fix so bad I'd watch anything. You'd figure someone would get this right eventually.

for a late round, somewhat out of shape developmental guy, he played better than expected.

Some folks on this board hated him because it made them feel all big to talk crap to his dad. That dude was a great source of info

Yep. If they want it to succeed they should give us junkies an offseason fix.

Will the be able to put nicknames on their jerseys like the XFL? Gimmicks are about the only chance this league has to survive playing fall ball alongside the big boys.
