Ex-football player paralyzed by shot
Robbery leaves the victim with severed spine
By PAIGE HEWITT

Former Arena Football League player Toren Robinson, 39, a father of three, was shot at his home in the 4700 block of Kennedy Heights around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

A former Arena Football League player is not expected to be able to walk again after being shot in the back and robbed by two men who struck him in the head with a gun for praying that God would forgive them, family members said Sunday.

Toren Robinson, 39, a father of three, was shot at his home in the 4700 block of Kennedy Heights around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Doctors are not going to remove the bullet because surgery could cause further damage, but he faces a "long rehabilitation," said Robinson's sister Ramona Robinson, 41.

"Doctors said the bullet severed his spine and that he won't walk, that he's paralyzed (from the waist down)," she said. "But that's the doctors. We are staying positive and putting it in God's hands. We're praying he'll walk again."

Robinson, a former Worthing High football star who attended Southern University on a full football scholarship, played pro ball as a wide receiver and linebacker for the now disbanded Arena Football League's Dallas Texans from 1990 to 1993. He now owns several rental houses.

Friday night, Robinson was going to his mailbox when he was approached by two young men, his sister said.

Realizing they were armed, he started running and was shot in the lower left back, she said. The two men dragged him inside the house and onto the kitchen floor, where Robinson begged for his life and prayed aloud for God to "forgive them for they know not what they do," she said.

The men told him to "shut up," and hit him in the head with the pistol, she said.

Meanwhile, Robinson's wife, Stacey, who had been alone inside the house, heard the commotion.

She sneaked around to the kitchen and saw her bloodied husband on the floor with two men hovering over him.

The wife, who did not see the suspects' faces, went into the bathroom and called 911.

They stole Robinson's watch, wallet, cash and his wife's wedding ring and jewelry. They fled in both family cars, which were recovered and dusted for fingerprints, police said.

Robinson told paramedics he couldn't move his legs or toes and that he had no feeling from his waist down, police said.
