Ex-NFL running back could face death penalty
by Josh Peter, USA TODAY Sports
Lawrence Phillips might face the death penalty in the alleged killing of his former cellmate at a California prison.
The judge in the first-degree murder case on Monday granted a motion that allows the Kern County (Calif.) District Attorney to reconsider whether to seek the death penalty against Phillips, the former football star.
The DA’s office sought a maximum of life in prison without parole when it filed charges in August. But prosecuting attorney Andi Bridges said new evidence was discovered during the ongoing investigation.
“We felt that the evidence supported a filing of a ‘lying in wait’ special circumstance,’’ Bridges told USA TODAY Sports, referring to conditions that would allow for the death penalty.
