Ex-Syracuse lineman Justin Pugh creeping toward first-round selection

Justin Pugh didn't participate in the bench press at the NFL combine but says he will during Syracuse's pro day Thursday.

Syracuse, N.Y. — The furniture points toward the television, and all three men lean in for a better view. The sound of futuristic gunfire blasts through the speakers of the flatscreen Dynex TV. A mix of cheers and epithets are hurled back.

It's a Sunday afternoon inside Justin Pugh's old apartment. He's back visiting his former roommates, Syracuse football players Charley Loeb and Zack Chibane, and the trio is "balling out," as Pugh puts it, in the popular Halo 4 video game.

His scouting reports make him sound like a big school David Arkin. Great feet, poor strength. If he has strength problems, he won't be a solid rookie starter. IMO strength is the most important factor in a rookie olineman being able to step in and play.

Last thing I read on him was something about a terrible Senior Bowl.

"Syracuse OT Justin Pugh did not look very good. At one point Pugh was absolutely worked by Georgia DE Cornelius Washington and almost got his quarterback killed and on the very next play he was pushed into the backfield like he was on roller-skates. There is no doubt that Pugh will have to play in a zone blocking scheme and there is now reason to wonder if he will be able to handle that."

he struggled at OT in the senior bowl, but he was pretty good at OG, which is the only place he will play in the NFL. But 1st round is to early for him. I have him in the 2nd.

I don't get the love for this player by the draft analysts.

Yes, he has super quick feet; however, he does not have good anchor strength and has really short arms (31.5") even for an OG.
