Expanded Route Tree Will Make Cole Beasley Uncoverable in 2018

With all of the unknown at the wide receiver position, it's good to know the Dallas Cowboys have someone like Cole Beasley to lean on. No, he's not the biggest or fastest WR on the roster, but he is without a doubt the most reliable and has been for some years now.

When asked earlier this offseason, Quarterback Dak Prescott stated that "Beasley is his No. 1 receiver" and it should come to no surprise. The two hit it off immediately in the Prescott's rookie season in 2016, which just so happened to be Beasley's most productive. Unfortunately, things didn't go as well in 2017 when opposing defenses decided to take #11 out of the equation by bracketing him in coverage.

I know I'm not alone here, but last season I was completely baffled that Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan didn't do a better job of scheming ways to help Cole Beasley get open more on a regular basis. Fortunately, it's looking as if he has learned from his mistake and that's exactly what he's going to in 2018.

One of the best things I've heard this offseason from the Dallas Cowboys is that they are planning to expand Cole Beasley's route tree. That may not seem like it's that big of a deal, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that it will make him uncoverable...

Nobody can cover Beasley 1 on 1 and I don't think that's really up for debate. The problem is that nobody expects him to run anything outside of 10 yards from the line of scrimmage so everyone gets to cheat and sit on his routes knowing that he's not going to run past them. He just has a smaller window to fit the ball into and he has to be able to hold up against big hits which-- give him credit for 2016 because I can remember several occasions where he got destroyed but still played all 16 games.

All of this national hate for the Cowboys' receiving corps and it's a better unit than the 2017 group.

Michael Gallup is an improvement over Brice Butler and at this point in their careers Allen Hurns is Dez Bryant minus the sideshow.

I think the scheme change will be a huge benefit. Something that should've been done years ago while Dez was in his prime.

What concerns me is he needed an offseason to figure that out, and where was Garrett while all of this was going on last season?

I hope it's better this year, but considering it's the same guys running the show I'm taking a wait and see approach.

Cole will be a beast if he can handle more targets and take the punishment. I worry about his durability. He's looking at his best year as a pro if he stays on the field.

You have explosive players all over the field now. You have Austin & Beasley, you have to let these guys have the run of the field, don't bottle them up on short passes, give CBs hell.

Huge difference from the past three seasons, it's not dependent upon a skills diminishing Dez Bryant.

Coaching can now make a very definable difference on the carpet.

Difference, for sure. How huge it is remains to be seen. Our offensive coaches don't strike me as innovators.

The move he put on the corner where he got deep last game was very impressive. Unfortunately the ball was overthrown.

This. We’ve had a bad combo of WRs that only looked glamorous because we had Romo pulling the strings.. you know how Brady does with his group, Rodgers etc...

Our WR won’t set records or have flashy plays but I want them to be consistent with routes and catch the balls that get thrown to hell with down and distance

They changed schemes and brought in speed, hands, and good route receivers. They now can force separation, and not Dez Bryant out muscling one or two defenders.

Gallup and Beas are definitely going to be efficient. Austin and Hurns TBD but I have good vibes.

Every direction that Beasley can make a cut in is a big problem for defenses. Keeping Beasley horizontal is what allowed the horizontal bracketing on Beasley to work so well.

Instead of 5 yards, then cut left or right, he should be breaking at 7-10 yards, putting all directions into play, including comebacks.
