If a team wants to keep a coach, how often do they let his contract expire ?

My impression is that teams extend coaches contracts the year before they expire if they really want to keep that coach.

I think most coaches on the final year of their contract look for another job before that season is over; although they probably have to do it indirectly because teams can't officially discuss a job with them until the contract has expired. I sure agent work in the gray area.

Correct. Most extensions are done with a year left. Just the norm so that coaches can pan for their families (schools, etc).

So maybe the Cowboys decided months ago they might not want some assistants to return?

Possible. Also possible that some coaches had been in the same place and need new scenery in hopes of moving up the career ladder. I could see Eberflus being ready to go. He has been fairly respected and been here since Rob Ryan. He must be ready for new scenery to ensure he isnt forgotten
