I buy the cheap cables too, but I do inspect the actual quality of the cable. There is cheap and then their is **** cables.

Generally for HDMI and stuff that doesn't move around much it's not as much of an issue, but with cables like USB and Firewire that get a lot of use (handling of the cable itself) it's a much bigger deal.

...is a common marketing tool that they teach in Marketing 101 with commerce or MBA degrees.

It's called lifestyle pricing. We all have our softness for lifestyle pricing because we all have our areas where we aspire to that lifestyle.

Whether it's clothes, electronics, cars, gadgets, homes you name it we all have it.

The best way to check out if you are being prone to lifestyle pricing is to check with manufacturers and actual not for retail distributors. They can reveal to you the competitors and the performance.

Next is to buy comparing items and try each one out and return the one you aren't satisfied with in value.

I would suggest not doing that with underwear though. Good luck and avoid the marketing tricks, but don't be dismayed we all get caught in these techniques. I know I have many times over the years.
