Explaining the reaction to last night's game

Disappointed is the word. What got me going was the lack of coaching. I was expecting more. I normally don't get riled up and much less post. I had the expected haters, calling me out, but I was pleasantly surprised as to the real knowledge of the game that many of our zoners have. Especially those that agreed with me. Lol
But, seriously, a young coach like CP,.regardless of his pedigree or knowledge, is gonna need someone to hold him by the hand for a bit. This could serve as a wakeup call and bring him back down to earth, or it could break him. I'm hoping for the best, but I'm surprised in Schotty not helping him more on the sidelines, but like I said, it's very hard to do that when you're calling plays

That’s a good point. Parker is a rookie as. DC.

Is he getting the guidance and help he needs from the head coach?

I don’t know but Schottenheimer isn’t a proven entity himself.

One of my concerns about Schotty as a HC calling plays is his seeming detachment from the defensive side of the ball. Not because he doesn’t care, but because he’s immersed in calling plays.

I’m not usually a fan of the HC also being the playcaller on either side of the ball. There are exceptions who can do it well - Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVey, and Sean Payton. But those guys are probably HOF coaches who are commanders of men. Schotty does not have that aura.

When Kliff Kingsbury was a HC at both the college and pro level, his offenses were great because that’s what he coached. But he just passed off his defenses to coordinators and never seemed to care. Schotty has that air at times too. It doesn’t work.

Last night’s results from the 28-20 loss to the giants led to a level of anger and frustration I haven’t seen around here since the horrific loss to the packers in the playoffs in Jan, 2024. It’s usually dark after a Cowboys loss but last night had a little something extra in it.

And I believe it’s completely understandable and explainable. Here are some of the reasons for the level of fan anger during and after last night’s game:

• The fan buy-in this off-season was the highest I’ve seen in a few years. “This year feels different” was a very common theme. And maybe it will still end up being different. It’s only one game. (Anyone not “buying in” whole hog was often called “negative”, lol)
• Last night had a new cast of players on D but unfortunately had a lot of the same problems as last year. People lost in coverage, clueless looks and the inability to get a critical stop.
• New Defensive Coordinator Christian Parker was practically fitted for a gold jacket this summer despite being 34, and a rookie DC never having called a game in his young life. He WILL need some patience of which there is none.
• Hate to say it but when it has been a three decade drought, patience is not something fans should be asked to give when the guys MOST responsible for this drought have zero accountability.
• AND…when your QB starts talking SB in July, maybe it’s time to tap the brakes and just focus on winning the next game.

BOTTOM LINE : Expectations probably exceeded capability. Surprise!
Here are some hard truths:

• The worst defense in the NFL in 2025 was always going to be a work in progress.
• If this defense had been mediocre last year and we added talent, it could become “good” this year.
• But this defense was awful the last two years. It may take more than a TC and PS to make this defense even middle of the pack.

Some change takes time. Should this fan base be patient? I think it’s completely understandable if many fans have zero patience. But this team will not be fixed with a draft and a new DC overnight. That was never “realistic”.

Folks, NFL teams are never forged in one game. We have 16 more of these. Will they be better? I don’t know. Time will tell.

But I do hope there is more patience - NOT for the leaders and players of this team. But for each other as Cowboys fans. If you were mad last night, you have every right to be. Direct your anger to the people running this thing…not each other.

Bob, we've been MORE than patient for going on 31 years now. I blame one person for that many years of consecutive failure . . . Jerry Jones. Until he sells this team l just dont see much changing. We haven't even been to an NFCCG in that time. This is not the Cowboys team l grew up watching. There's no excuse for this.

Yeah yeah yeah...we know Jerry is the prime susoect.

But WHEN...do we hold these players accountable? They are grown men...professionals.

I will say this team could obviously still make strides and show improvement. But what made last night sting so much for so many was the level of buy-in that things WERE already fixed and different. That was never realistic.

Meaning I think the level of kool aide drinking was high which after seeing the game caused many to be mad at the team and themselves for biting the hook again.

After 6% of the season it’s way too early to throw a towel in the ring. But I do understand why so many were upset. They bought in to something that is still in major overhaul.

Another way to say it, we’re 99.938% of the way through 31 years of losing.

I will add this thought here because I commented in this thread that I was disappointed with the head coach-- but here is something that's not fair to this guy. In his day after presser, he should not have to field questions about what one of the owners said earlier in the day on radio. The media should absolutely ask the questions- I just don't believe the owners should create these opportunities for the media. Schotty is certainly not experienced enough to have to give his thoughts on what Jerry or Stephen had to say earlier on the radio. It's crazy.

I stated before this game that I WILL have patience on the defense because of obvious reasons.....however I still retain the right to hammer them like chopped-meat during this journey

Great point. And Jerry and Stephen are both so arrogant and full of hubris they refuse to stop undermining their head coach in the media. They’ve done it for years.

I have heard both Jones guys announce starters, the nature of an injury to a player, etc, then have the HC blindsided in a presser a few min later not knowing any of that information.

Imagine being an NFL HC knowing that fans might get information before he as the HC does. Insanity.

All good points, as usual from you. I just want to focus in on this one. Dak by no means is a bad player. But when you going to start talking the talk, then you better walk the walk and back it up, and not get flustered on the opening game of the season, because new york is playing with heart and emotion since it is game honoring 9/11. It's discouraging to me, if we don't have the leadership on the team to make sure the team gets back focus when it is not even a playoff game. I will be truly heart broken if next week another team shows us that New York isn't nearly as good as they looked against us, which they are not considering we were down by only 8 points.

Most of the hype comes from the players and the front office every year. And every year they never learn to shut their mouth. Dak has become the biggest one with Super Bowl talk and the greatest offense. When your leader has a big mouth and the front office then the culture becomes entitled in the locker room. Almost like they think they just have to show up.

They basically started over from scratch on defense because it was totally devoid of personnel talent last year. So the bar wasnt gonna be that high to begin with in regards to improvement.
Its just how last night's physical domination appeared so as to make it so much worse and totally dampen any and all of those false expectations.

This place has got a couple of armchair GMs who bought in and really missed on most all of their opinions on what all of the new players are capable of.
It ain't a DC or scheme thing. It's just the players didnt show the night and day improvement level in talent over last years trash of a dee like many thought.

Plenty of crow and opinion swallowing to go around. Especially for a select few. They won't man up here though because they never do as their modus operandi is to deflect and pretend ignorance.
