My point is that they wouldn't have to pay him 13 million a year. They could rent him in 2014 and see if they want to keep him or not. They could also potentially work out a better salary for him later on as he would have less market value, and would know it.

It would still cost them 12.25M. It does not matter if they spread it out, it still adds up to 12.25M for 1 year of play. Teams would not pay him 12.25M if he was a free agent. They definitely won't give up draft picks for the right to pay him 12.25M.

The best YOUNG free agent DL are unlikely to get 12.25M per year.

Also, a team could just pay Jared Allen about 6M or 8M and not have to part with draft picks.

As we saw from freeney and arbraham last season 30 plus linemen aren't that popular on the open market forget trade market. Also ware is not what he once was but u think a 5th round pick is reall gonna be better than ware how's our 5th round success been latley

Ware isn't going anywhere; he'll be restructured and be a starter for this team next year.

Upgrade the interior line and put him next to legitimate starters and he'll be more productive.

He needs to be released. Not restructured. And a trade isn't happening.

While I appreciate the thought that went into the OP's post, I just don't see Ware being traded. From the Cowboys' point of view, you would have to get something valuable to replace a player who could be very effective for at least another year if he gets healthy. For the potential trading partner's point of view, you have an aging D-lineman with injury concerns, an ineffective year in the 4-3 and a year away from playing in the 3-4.

I think it's overwhelmingly probable that the Cowboys keep Ware, hope he gets healthy and work with him to improve his 4-3 techniques. After 2014, however, he's probably gone, one way or another.

I think that this is probably what the Cowboys will do. To be fair, there is no way of knowing if cutting him or keeping him is the right decision, but I would probably cut him. He might net us a 3rd round comp pick next year.

There are more teams that need pass rushers than premium pass rushers available. If you wait for Free Agency then you have to compete against every other team for his services. A bidding war would be pretty probable for guys like Allen and Ware. The Cowboys would probably be in on Allen if they move Ware. If you trade for him, he is yours and all you have to do is pay him, but none of his contract is guaranteed.

If you cut him you don't get comp pics. Ware is a cut or pay cut. We can't afford another $12 million if he had great production when you can get good
Players at that position for four to seven million.

I think that is true of Ware in year's past, but I am afraid those days are long gone.

Ware has had two injury hampered seasons and everyone is throwing dirt on the guy. Step in off the ledge. He can still play at a very high level (he was fine in the Eagles game) and while we might be overpaying the production on this team-- that's hardly something new for this front office.

If you cut him-- you might as well cut Witten and Romo and blow the whole team up. The core is all about the same age, and their production is good but not elite. OR, you add a few more pieces via the draft, low-mid tier FAs and try and make a run over the next 2 years.

He's not a FA until after the 2017 season.

I don't see Ware going anywhere so all we can hope for is for him to be fully recovered from the injuries and play well, good enough to get at least double digit sacks and few FF.

Didn't read all the thread, but I always think the same thing when threads such as this pop up. You don't want to be the team that Buy's high, and sells low.

I get wanting to cut your losses, and if trading him is the best way to do that I'm all for it. But as much as I doubt we ever see Ware return to his old glory, that doesn't mean we should all automatically assume any draft pick will be more valuable at this point. Our DL is the biggest concern on this team, if it's possible to rebuild it while retaining Ware, that's what you do.

There will not be a bidding war for a player coming off a terrible year and a 2nd year with injuries

I think he plays at least one more year here, maybe more. I refuse to write him off for one down year.
