Extend T. Crawford?

Next off season was setting up to be a fairly easy off season when it comes to extending/re-signing players with Crawford being the real big one to do. That has gotten more complex in the last few weeks. Unless deals are addressed, they will have to decide what to do with three important players. Dez, Hardy and Crawford.

If Dez doesn't get a deal by July 15th, he will play this season under the tag and will not be able to sign any new contract before the season ends. You also now have Hardy to decide on. If he performs as many expect and stays on the straight and narrow, he's going to get big time money from someone next year.

That leaves Crawford. He showed up last season. The sacks weren't there, but he was very disruptive and probably the most disruptive player on the D-line. If he plays his contract out, he could secure a nice, lucrative contract next season. With Dez, Crawford and possibly Hardy getting set to hit free agency, it would be pretty hard to keep all three and end up with a decision on which two to keep.

With all that being said, I think it would be very smart to try and get ahead of that potential problem. I feel like trying to extend Crawford should be a top priority now that Hardy is officially signed. He hasn't shown himself to be elite yet, so it would be smart to try and sign him to a contract similar to Scandrick. You may be able to get a team friendly deal and make it easier to extend Dez and Hardy if they choose to.

So what do you think CZ? Roll the dice and let him play it out, or try to extend him now? How high would you go to extend him now?

Not a chance. Maybe halfway through the season, but he would be dumb to take an extension after only one season as a starter, and the cowboys would be foolish to get into such a contract. Let him earn his money, then reward him handsomely if he earns it.

I think it would be very smart of the Cowboys. I do agree though Crawford probably won't go for it. He is in excellent position to get paid.

I disagree. He's shown he can play and i remember that other players already told us to watch out for him even before last season. If we give him a nice signing bonus we can have him locked up for a few years like we did with Scandrick. That was smart signing.

There is just no way to assess his value on a contract for either side. Anything the Cowboys would offer him is well below what the market would pay if he plays very well this season.

Well, it takes two to tango. And like many other questions: it depends. I'm sure if the Cowboys offered enough, Crawford would sign. The tricky part is how much is he willing to sign for?

If the Cowboys are low-balling him, then he may play out the year and hope to play well and hit the jackpot in FA.

There is a whole year of film to assess his value on. The whole point of extending him now is to get a slight discount over his market value with another good season. Its simply a matter of is Crawford a guy you would bet on to continue to get better? if so you offer him a contract. If not then you let him play out the year, and reevaluate the situation

He probably wants to wait. He probably sees himself blowing up stats wise, especially with Hardy playing on the line with him.

You do realize that Crawford has to agree to that. If he also believes that he is a difference maker, why would he sign a discount contract now? And much as I like Crawford, I'm not ready to say I need to lock him up to a long term deal. He's very good, but I'm not sure if he's great.

yes i realize that crawford must agree as well, and as i said before i doubt he would. Most players do tend to bet on themselves, and i have no problem with that. I just would explore the options with Crawford, and who knows maybe he would prefer a little less money over what he could have on the open market in exchange for a safety net against a poor season or injury.

If he wants to play it out or has unrealistic expectations, of course you have to let it play out. On the other hand, he's a player on the rise, but wasn't a truly great player last season and already knows how the injury bug can bite. I expect he would be open to at least negotiating if its fair. Its a risk on both sides, but maybe he could be signed to what ends up being team friendly.

Yes they should ay least try to sign him. IMO, they probably could have signed Free or Parnell for much less than the 5M that Free got if they had made the offer last offseason.

I would also add that I prefer a hungry player trying to get a great contract to one who has already gotten a 3-4 year security blanket.

He has never mad e huge money. It is hard to turn down that first 5m check. That is how they get so many team friendly deals. Even 5m if life changing money, 4yr/18m 10 guaranteed 5m signing bonus.
