The Cowboys designated Orlando Scandrick as a post-June 1st cut back in March. That means, in a couple of days, the team gains an additional $3.1 million or so of cap space.

Over The Cap.com says the Cowboys now have $9.1 million of space already; so kicking that up to over $12 million probably isn't that big of a deal. Unless.....the reason I bring this up is, could the team finally have the cash to make a run at a certain safety from Seattle that could put this young secondary over the top??

They always had the cash, it's the draft picks Seattle wants that is the issue.

The Cowboys were wise to show restraint.

True. But I haven't been keeping up with the rest of the NFL lately and I was thinking if Thomas really wants out, the Seahawks may be willing to lower their asking price.

Personally, I would wait until 2019 when he becomes a free agent anyway.

Exactly
Never been about money and this money we clear will just roll into next year.
They could use some on Martin if they wanted to but even with him we’ve had plenty of money
I presume his is more about length. My guess is they want a longer deal than he does. I’m sure he would like a shorter deal so he can get one more contract and the team would like to lock him down for the remainder of his career
In the end they will get it done

It'll be interesting to see what Dallas does with this surplus.

The team doesn't really need it to sign Martin or Lawrence, although Dallas could take a bigger cap hit the first year of Martin's contract to absorb some of the massive amount it will be paying him.

It could just push the money into the next offseason, but I wonder how that works with the spending that the CBA requires teams to do now. Has Dallas reached the limit of what it has to spend?

Or it could wait until the end of camp and use it if it makes a deal for someone like Thomas then. The indication from the front office is that it could end up with a tradeable commodity at that point that would help broker a deal (not necessarily for Thomas but in general). It could even bank it until closer to the trade deadline and make a deal at that point.

Cap accelerations go away after 1 year. This is not an inflationary environment and there is no interest either. In the typical economy waiting means your dollars become worth less and you accrue interest. That is why waiting to pay is a bad thing.

In the NFL the value of a dollar deflates over time as long as the cap expands so it benefits to push payables down the line.

Just for clarity's sake you have to subtract 593k since someone will be added to the 51 man roster in his place

That leaves the team with 11.6m in Cap Space...... still plenty to trade for EThomas at 8.5m

ET needs to be here. Restraint is good, but in this case, we need to make a move. I wouldn't give up more than a future 3 and MAYBE a player.
