Cowboys | Sam Hurd may not re-sign
Sun, 09 Jan 2011 17:58:05 -0800

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR Sam Hurd may not re-sign with the Cowboys because he could look for a team where he would be more involved in the offense, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

bad move, we need to resign Spears. He is a much bigger peice then fans realize. Even if we draft a DL high I'd still like to bring him back.

You cant let Bowen,Hatcher AND Spears go.

Of the three DL who are FAs, I'd prefer to keep Spears.

If the team is intent on not re-signing Spears, I'd prefer to keep Bowen (between he and Hatcher) as a rotation player.

Also, I would like to re-sign Kosier as well, but also bring in competition via the Draft to challenge him down the line.

I wouldn't even think about signing Hatcher, another dud from the 2006 draft class. That one was about as good as 09 and the great BP ran that one.

Spears is going to want a ton of money and this draft class has some DE that will do just as good.

Hurd will never be more than a ST guy.

I was saying the week after his injury that the Cowboys were missing Marcus Spears.

I hope they re-sign him. Unless they have bigger and better plans, he's a good piece that's key to pushing the pocket and swallowing up multiple blockers. He's also a run-stuffer.

I'm with you on Spears, but he may cost more than he's worth. Somebody out there may offer him big bucks. I don't think Bowen will be leaving, but if someone offers him a decent contract, he could be gone, too.

A couple things on Spears. He's good against the run, not so much against the pass. This wouldn't be as big a problem, if we didn't have pretty much the same thing at the other DE spot. I know people would prefer to get rid of Igor (myself included), but he's in the middle of a contract, as opposed to being a FA. 5 million a year may be too much for him, but what would be the supposed cap hit if they release him. Also add into that, the deal that Spears may get from some other team, and it may be much more cost effective to keep Igor and let Spears go.

I think to be a championship team, we need better than Spears. Stopping the run is necessary, but so is the ability to get to the passer, which Spears basically has none. I don't see Bowen getting away. I think it'll be Spears and Hatcher.

Oh, and btw, the blurb said "may not" resign Spears. Stay tuned.

Just out of curiosity, what leads you to believe that he's not that good against the pass?

My guess is that you're using his sack numbers as a measuring stick. Not being combative, mind you, just wondering.

spears has never gotten much of a push, but he is very good against the run and so considering our needs if we can get him reasonably do it.

Spears...see Canty.
He's good but not worth a heavy investment. We can't have premium contracts at every position + we may be looking at his clone (Dareus) when we are ready to pick at #9. I have no worries about Spears leaving but it does bother me a bit that he most likely will be a Commander if we don't resign him.

I don't think there will be too much interest in Spears so we should be able to bring him back relatively cheap. The fact that we struggled stopping the run after his injury doesn't necessarily show that he was such a great run defender we cannot live without but more of an indictment of our backups.
