If we want to give up both 1st round picks :D

They would be foolish to franchise him and he is a UFA at the end of the season so he can go where he wants...

I would think that a back as coveted as he appears to be, San Diego might franchise just to have the option to negotiate a contract or find a trade partner, especially in this poor free agent runningback group. Or maybe he's not that good and they'll just let him walk....
If they franchise him, they have to offer him at least the average of the top 5 RBs salaries in the league. So the Chargers would essentially be paying 2 of the top 6 RB salaries in the league. Won't happen.

If they place a transition tag on him, they would have to offer him the average of the top 10 salaries, but would have the right to match any other offers. (He wouldn't get other offers if he was franchised.) If they match and he chooses somewhere else, THEN they could get compensation.

But you can't just place one of these tags on a guy and expect to negotiate like you would with any other player. You have to offer a LOT of money... too much to use on a career backup.

I thought he would still be restricted this off season?

IIRC, you can only be a RFA once and that is only on your initial rookie contract. (I believe it's at 3-4 years).

He was RFA last season, and they made a first round tender offer on him I believe. That means if some other team came and signed him, then the Chargers would get a 1st round pick from them. But that was a one year deal, and now Turner is a UFA.

Essentially, the Chargers signed him to a deal to find out a way to either buy them some time to get something for him, or as insurance for LT if something should go wrong.

First, I would love to have "The Burner"; however, I would be leery about paying him market price for fear of losing "The Barbarian" in a contract dispute a few years from now.

If Turner will accept something along the lines of what Ladell Betts took from the Commanders (which is likely below market value); bring him aboard. Otherwise, I would look at the draft and probably someone like Justin Fargas.

The Barbarian, the son of Huggy Bear and a draft prospect would be alright in my opinion. But make no mistake about it, Michael Turner is the best choice if he can be had at a reasonable price.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of using our two #1's on either a Tackle, S, WR, or CB, and try to get micheal turner for RB.

It just makes the most sense to me.

The money Tackles and CB's are getting in this league as FA's is mind boggling. Why not pick them up in the draft and pick up a RB like turner in FA.

I agree 110 percent.....and Wade knows this player

This is the only name you need to know, PosterChild... ;)

took the words right out of my mouth

except that whole posterchild thing

The more I think of it the more I like the idea of signing Turner to replace JJ to split the load with Barber and saving our first rounders for a WR (maybe Fitz) and a DB.

I would love our offense to feature:

QB - Romo
RB - Barber, Turner
WR - TO, Fitz, Crayton
TE - Witten

Those are weapons. Serious weapons.

Justin Fargas wouldnt be a bad speed back to complement Barber if we don't keep Jones.
