FA tampering - Penalties

Some buzz generating that the NFL sent a letter to all 32 teams about possible penalties for agreeing to contract figures starting on Saturday prior to FA starting on 10 March.

Don't think anything will come of it but wouldn't it be great if they removed a 1st round pick from each team that has been linked to a player and that player signs a contract with the same reported numbers we are now seeing.

Right now we would move up from 27 to 19.

Jax - Parnell
Oak - Hudson
Skins - Paea
Bears - McPhee
Miami- Suh
SD - Franklin
KC - Maclin
Philly - Maxwell

have all reported contract figures with these players which is a clear violation of NFL policy. If the league wants to get serious and stop this, taking a 1st rounder will do it.

this whole 3 day thing was stupid. Should of kept it the other way even though it was still happening at least if news leaked you knew now all team need to do is tweak the final contract enough at signing that its all OK.

i'd have to agree, but if they never do anything about the rule, it will become toothless and may as well toss it out.

No, they should just make players free agents after their final regular season or playoff game if it applies (similarly to coaches).

I do find it annoying that all of these players have committed before they are actually allowed to commit. It shows you which players are 100% about the money though considering that most of these players that have committed have not even met the coaches or visited the facility of the team they are signing with; they are just taking the largest offer their agent can find.

This should be a good sign for Murray though; I'm sure some team has offered him a nice contract but he isn't jumping at the biggest bag of money.

Thats wouldn't work on so many levels. Teams out of the playoffs would have an advantage to those FA. Teams would have to have cap space to sign them then anyways. It starts after the new league year for a reason. Everyone knows the cap and has time to assess its own FAs. That would be a radical approach. Just change the stupid rule to no 3 day window and punish the teams that violate it without prejudice. Simple.

So you can talk to them, but you can't talk about contract terms?

What are they supposed to talk about, Yu Darvish's elbow?

Its incredibly stupid. Basically its supposed to go like
Team: We think your price should be 5 years 50 million
Agent: We think its 5 years 70 million
Team: Thats high, maybe 5 years 60 million
Agent: Possibly, 5 for 60 may be fair

Instead its full blown negotiations and the teams should be punished accordingly.

The agent should be able to gauge interest and book meetings for when FA officially begins; not agree to contracts.

Simple way to fix this, make it similar to the Rooney Rule. Players should be required to visit at least two teams before agreeing to a contract.

Work for coaches just as easily. At worst you could start the league year the day after the super bowl. Teams should be assessing their free agents and other teams free agents year round... They could announce the new cap after the end of the regular season.

The NFL wants to sell FA Tuesday as some kind of must see TV event, but they also love staying in the news cycle all week.

Coaches aren't the same. They need to get in early to address those needs and study the roster anyways. Its been barely a month since the super bowl. I see no reason for it to start the next day. Thats still an unfair advantage to teams who dont make the playoffs. They have several months to assess their needs, where a coaching staff in season would have very little time to assess the needs, whos a FA, the strength of the draft etc. I see no reason for such a radical change when just removing the window and punishing teams accordingly for violating would work just fine.
