Airline passengers soon will be able to use electronics such as readers and games during takeoffs, landings and throughout flights, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday.

Before the new rule takes effect, airlines must demonstrate that aircraft won't be at risk because of potential interference from portable electronic devices.

That is expected to take place quickly and the devices approved for use by the end of the year in most of the nation's airline fleet.

Connecting to the Internet remains prohibited when the plane is less than 10,000 feet in the air. Voice calls also are banned during the entire flight, under a Federal Communications Commission rule.

Do we really want people making calls while on the plane? Planes, like doctors offices, should be quiet, so you can relax.

I certainly don't. There are people who don't know how to use their inside voices.

Shoot, I had an early morning flight to Orlando and had to sit in the back. These three guys literally got drunk at 7 am and were yucking it up the whole flight. I could hear them through my headphones. One guy ended up throwing up just as we were about to land. I was pretty grossed out.

Cellular phone service would be very spotty at high altitudes and will not work unless very close to a tower (i.e. over a city).

I agree, atm, but when there is money to be made, things get invented/changed to make that money.

The FAA should recognize that allowing cell phone use on an airplane represents a huge passenger safety risk. As in, when you start yakking on your phone, I may smack you upside the head with my wifi-enabled laptop.

I don't know if the looser restrictions and allowing people to use the devices during takeoff and landings includes talking on the phone.

It seemed like it mostly talked about playing games, e readers and other apps that may or may not use wifi.

I would imagine they would still discourage talking on the phone.

That's what I've read. Still no phone usage.

The restrictions were probably not necessary. BUT it's a little disturbing that people can't go 15mins without all that stuff.

Great. Now I don't have to see a women argue with a flight attendant about turning off her phone to delay a flight anymore. -_-

Yeah. It's mostly the rule about having things shut off totally even in airplane mode which seems to defeat the purpose of airplane mode. The simple fact that electricity is being used somewhere within the plan poses a risk?

twerking is already dead. jeez, dude. subscribe to the playboy channel.

Trust me. "twerking" hasn't died. It just went off camera and back to the club. Girls were dropping it like it was hot long before Miley got turned on to it. lol
