Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin had surgery Thursday to repair a fracture to a facial bone he suffered when Jets defensive back Eric Smith drilled him on Sunday.
But while surgery for a broken facial bone sounds serious, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt sounded optimistic that Boldin would return sooner rather than later.
“The doctor felt like it would give him the quickest chance to get back,” Whisenhunt said, per the Arizona Republic.
The doctor who performed the surgery on Boldin said he knew of a hockey player who underwent the same procedure and was playing 10 days later. Boldin has been ruled out for the Cardinals’ game tomorrow against the Bills, but there’s a chance he could be back for Week 6 against the Cowboys or, more likely, Week 8 against the Panthers after the Cardinals’ Week 7 bye.
