I haven't seen anyone talking about it, but Dallas has been caught by 2 fake punts in recent games--I saw the one against Philly coming a mile away. There have been a few big penalties on punt defense as well.

Going to need them to tighten this up.
And i scream at the monitor WATCH THE FAKE WATCH THE FAKE WATCH THE FAKE WATCH FAKE!!!! And bones fossil never seems to listen. It is annoying, and why bones does nothing to prevent these is beyond me. Very easily defended and actually like a turnover if it is foiled.

I'd also love to see Bones teach our special teams to punt block. Literally every single punt return Turpin has one if not 2 guys in his face. It's pathetic how poorly they block for him.

I feel like they should have been expecting the first one because Philly was struggling and needed a spark. Did not feel that they should have seen the one by Detroit coming as it was a close game where the Lions did not really need to take a chance.

It's clear that teams have identified Tolbert as the player to attack on fake punts because he is a receiver and can't cover. I won't be surprised if the adjustment we made, putting Wright out there instead, isn't permanent. I think it's better to have DBs out there covering the gunners anyway.

They always draw flags - they beyond dumb - now I think they at the point where they just want to fair catch it and let the offense go do their thing.

But thats the thing on the fake punts, he comes off the gunner...why?

His only job is to stay with the gunner period it aint rocket science - Boys made a bunch of stupid mistakes vs Detroit - painful to watch.

I've been harping on this much of the season. Bones had a spark when he started but I'm ready to pack up his bags this offseason, we desperately need to get back to the basics on special teams.

Teams have obviously seen something the like. It's going to be something they need to be prepared for going forward. What is Bones coaching these guys during the weeks?

He's trying to stay between him and the returner, so when the gunner cuts back toward the line of scrimmage, he's not ready for it. He's thinking like a blocker instead of a defender.

I dont think so - in the Detroit game he got caught "looking in the backfield" - the gunner got behind him.

Just saw the replay of the eagles one and when the punter releases the ball Tolbert is running towards the middle of the field no where near the gunner, why in the world does he have his back to the gunner?

I remember on the game thread I kept asking what Tolbert was doing on the play.

You are correct. He came up on the run fake and the receiver raced past him. Again, better to have a DB out there for that.

I could ALMOST forgive him for the Detroit one, but I'm still trying to figure out what he was doing on the Eagles one.

Go to about 3:16

Yeah your occasional trick plays and punt blocks are not worth penalties and never having a dangerous return man be able to actually make a return. Turpin is sometimes quick to fair catch as well but it's hard to blame him when he so used to having guys breathing down his neck.

Lol I think MM tore into him the last punt block penalty because he hasn't attempted one since.

Like you said they are just trying not to draw a flag anymore.

The thing I don't understand is how he's not aware of fake punts. He used them often in LA. I'm surprised that his unit been beaten on them twice. Like someone said, if the unit is aware when they happen and stops it, then it's basically a turnover.
