After beating the chiefs and egirls back to back, the amount of our fans here at the Zone that immediately transitioned to “this team will run the table” and make a playoff run was puzzling.

Don’t get me wrong. I was excited to see this team win three straight and look a lot better doing it. But it was still a bit mystifying. How could a defense ranked near the absolute bottom of the NFL suddenly turn into a team capable of winning 8 straight? The offense has been good most of the time all year. But the defense?

Anyway…here are my questions:
  • What made you believe this team was capable of winning 8 straight?
  • After losing to Detroit, do you still believe this team is playoff bound? Why or why not?
What changed either way?

Its been 30 years of similar issues, unless you are a cheerleader fan (like lots of people here) it’s insane to think this team was going to change 100% with some trades and bringing back a glass LB and an injured rookie CB.

While they made it fun for a couple weeks I can't say I really thought this team was going to go from not being able to put up back to back wins to running the table for 8 straight. They brought in two extremely good players in Q and Overshown who fundamentally changed how this team plays defense, but like most things after a couple of weeks the rest of the league saw the film and caught up to us and what we were doing with new personnel. Detroit did a very nice job of isolating out defenders and getting the 1v1 matchups they wanted. This defense is still moving in the right direction, but anytime you go from one extreme to the other expect some pullback. The optimism we should have as fans is in this front office really making an attempt to overhaul this defense this offseason and build on what they've started which includes a very good foundation between EZ, Overshown, and Q. No playoffs this year though.

because of parody....i think good scheme and most of all tough mindedness is needed in this era...i think we began to feel ourselves

including Schotty and Fluse...but we need better talent on back 7 and serious tough coaching for next year....Schotty appeared to

play a weak first 15 plays on offense...playoffs is possible...but we would need real transformation not to be one and done?....what

do you think Bob?

It is exactly as I told my fellow Cowboys fans who I speak with every day in my neck of Saints territory. After the Quinnen Williams trade, I said the team salvaging its regular season and making any bid for postseason would be a three-part test:

Beat Philadelphia.

Beat Kansas City.

Beat Detroit.

I said I would start talking playoffs IF the team could pull off all three. It did not happen. So, I will be rooting 100% for the team to win all its remaining games as I have done every game for over half a century. However, my expectation of the playoffs has lowered to none after Thursday night's loss.

The 2nd question is a bit of leading one…..we all know the chances of playoffs are now slim with that loss.

I think even optimistic fans like myself thought we dug ourselves a hole too big at 3-5 to run the table. I don’t the Detroit loss had to do anything with “film” or the league catching up to us, it was more about running up against a caged animal who was starving for a win where as I believe we started to believe the hype and didn’t come in as focused or prepared.

Anyway who thought we were gonna run the table was likely guessing that the offense has been elite all season long and would be favorites in every game almost to end the season.

I think we lose to the chargers and win the rest of the games if you’re asking my 2 cents but let’s see what happens

I wonder if our fan base is so starved for improvement, we are willing to believe so badly all it takes is winning 3 straight.

Not knocking those wins. Just wondering how we got so much “faith”, lol?

I mean, not for nothing but the games we won are not games the cowboys typically win in the past- down 21-0 against defending champs, getting key stops and winning with offense against the chiefs.

Those wins showed mental toughness- something this team has locked for a while

I expected them to win about 3 of the final 5 will Detroit the most likely loss.

If you had told me Kenneth Murray would still be starting, I would have changed that to zero of 5...

From trades and back from injury they added 6 players to the defense:
QW
Logan Wilson
Overshown
Revel
Hooker
D. Wilson

Parity comes into play over long periods of time. My take on this team has changed very little from season’s start when I picked them to win 8 games.

The acquisition of Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams have made us better defensively. But expecting those two guys to miraculously improve our D at midseason to playoff levels was always a stretch.

I still expect us to win 8. My hope is we have a great off-season building a much more complete roster. I’m just not sure we have a front office that really knows how to do that.

Before the season I never thought we would make the playoffs.. but would set things up for a go next season.

Must admit tho.. I got a lil excited when the D started playing so well.

The whole team didn't play great at Detroit.. Aubrey was the only standout.

But we were never winning 8 in a row.. that was just wishful thinking.

No way we were winning 8 straight. Get the loss out of the way. Had to have happened at some point, why not now? With the tie we earned, a tiebreaker scenario is negated so it doesn't matter who we lose to.

Should beat the Vikings and Commanders. I'd lean Cowboys against the Giants too, but they're not quite a gimme. Chargers game will be the test.

Simple as that.

I don't think anyone was convinced of that, who said we were going win 8 straight??

I think most of us said we could maybe recreate what happened in 2018 and that would be 7-1 down the stretch and that's still open but this year it takes more to get the wild card than it has in the past, there's gonna be some teams that may have 10 or 11 wins and not get in in the NFC because it's stacked..

The Cowboys were in the AFC they were they would make the playoffs this year they could probably get into the wild card with 9 wins That's where all these scenarios fall apart is what comments are you in what division are you in how many wins is it going to take they dug themselves a hole but I don't think anybody thought they were truly going to be undefeated eight straight wins...

There's the difference but in 2018 they did go seven and one down the stretch and most of us were thinking they can possibly do that and it's still on the table..

That doesn't mean we're gonna go to the playoffs but it means that at least post bye, they have been playing better and it at least gives you some hope for next year..

Bob, start from the realization that you're talking about a fanbase that every year in training camp thinks that every undrafted free agent and 6th round "steal" is going to be an all pro, and go from there. Pretty easy to figure out how so many of them get sucked in so easily.

Jerry is the pied piper of suckers and dreamers.
