1. It is hot in San Antonio. 104 today. Expected to be same tomorrow, etc, etc, but next Thursday it is supposed to cool down to 99. The Alamodome AC works great.
2. McGee looked pretty good today. He hit Ogletree on a deep ball that would have been a TD. Picture perfect pass, DBs trailing three yards behind. Couldn't see who they were. On another play, McGee made another great throw while on the run.
3. Esckridge has a strong arm, I hope he sticks. I was talking with one of his college professors in the stands today. She said he was one of the brightest guys in the class and rode a bicycle everywhere he went. Her mentioning Midwestern State made me even more thankful for the AC. Witchita Falls is hotter than San Antonio during training camp.
4. I think the oline did a lot better today. Sam Young did well at left tackle. Tyron Smith had a couple false starts. I'm not worried about that. Having Demarcus Ware across from them makes a lot of veteran tackles make false starts. Most of the pressure on the QBs came from the outside, but there were a few interior problems. As I said, they were better today. They are working hard, and in my opinion, with the front seven they face during drills, their hard work will eventually pay dividends. On one running play Tyron Smith was trying to block down on the DE, but because of Ryan's constant shifting there was no DE there when the ball was snapped. He still blocked down, but just hit the guard's back. Before he could find somebody in a blue jersey to hit, the play was over.
5. Montrae Holland walked into the dressing room with a trainer. No limp and no apparent injury. He looked exhausted.
6. Tysson Poots was better today.
7. Ogletree made a couple of really nice over-the-shoulder catches in the corner of the endzone. He also dropped a couple passes across the middle.
8. Romo, and the starting backs and recievers could start the season tomorrow and be just fine. Bryant, Witten, Austin, Jones, Ogletree, and Gronkowski just seem to click with Romo. Now, if only we had somebody to block for them.....
9. Watching the DBs and LBs do the punch the ball out from behind drill, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the equipment guy elected to hold the ball while they punched it. It was obvious that most of the time they were hitting the ball and the arm both. He must have been hit twenty times.
10. Go ahead and pencil Dwayne Harris into the WR #4 position. He was returning kicks in special teams today, just like he has the last two practices I have attended. He and AOA. Ogletree did return one, but other than that it was just the same two guys rotating. The two deep blockers on the kick return team rotated, with Gronkowski and Phillips taking the first kick return and Chapas and some rookie tight end whose name I do not know, taking the second. On one return, the crowd oohed and cheered when AOA faked the last defender out of position and blew by him. Unfortunately it really didn't mean much because the last defender he juked was the 4th string QB, Zack Eskridge. (No, he wasn't auditioning for special teams duty. They used him and the extra punter and most of the new wide receivers to replicate the kicking team.)
11. Despite other poster's predictions, I don't think Chapas is athletic enough to unseat Gronkowski. He just looks stiff out there.
12. Felix Jones got the corner turned and was gone on one running play, but most of the other running plays were stoned at or near the line.
13. Barry Church shot through a gap on a sweep and the loud collision with the ball carrier (I think it was Tanner) got the crowd pumped.
15. My pet cat, Lyle Leong stretched for a pass in the end zone but let it bounce through his hands. Would have been a tough catch, but one an undrafted rookie has to make.
16. At the end of the first kickoff drill, everybody in the stadium could hear Coach Decamillas scream, "finish it, finish it! That was a horse**** finish! Do it again!"
17. While the team was on a break, Holley and McCann were playing catch in the far endzone. I wonder if the NFL would consider that participating in practice? (This whole, wait until August 4 stuff is stupid.)
18. After one water break, the equipment guys wheeled the water carts back off the field. Dez Bryant still had a cup in his hand. Instead of tossing it down for one of the equipment guys to pick up, he jogged 30 yards and put it in the trash before jogging back to the next drill. Minor little thing, but I thought it spoke volumes about him, and about how this team is coached.
19. I think Josh Brent will get a lot of playing time. He is big, strong, and quick.
20. The practice seemed to move at a slower pace today. Everybody was hustling, but there seemed to be more time between drills.
21. Buehler has more leg on the long FGs, but Bailey continues to drill them. I think Buehler missed one today from 52, wide left. Bailey's just made it over the cross bar. I think Bailey hit all of his attempts today. I wasn't counting so I may be mistaken about that.
22. I thought the extra punter, whatever his name is, the left-footed guy, was hitting them pretty good until McBriar started. There is no competition there. Speaking of no competition, L.P. Laduceur has the best job on the team. Good pay, the work isn't hard, and he'd have to really start screwing up to loose his job.
23. Frank Warren runs slow, and looks out of shape.
24. Newman went down in a collision with Radway. He was slow getting up. I have read on here that it was his groin, but it looked to me like he was favoring his shoulder.
25. Lee dropped a sure interception. Speaking of interceptions, the DBs and LBs did one drill where they back-pedalled and then broke left or right to catch a pass on the run. A lot of drops. There is the old saying, "that's why they don't play wide-reciever."
26. Coach Robinson was back with the wide receivers.
27. All the free agent guys should be on the field tomorrow. Unfortunately, I can't be there. (unless I win the lottery tonight. No,.... forget that, if I won the lottery, I still wouldn't be there.) Somebody please let us know how the team does with Kosier and Free back in there. You'd think the "reporters" would do that, but they seem too busy writing cutesy "human interest" stuff about individual players. If they don't make the team, I don't care what their high school coach has to say about them. If they make the team, we'll have plenty of time for that. Right now all I want to know is: "how are they doing in practice?"
28. There seemed to be a bigger than usual fan attendance today. As alluded to earlier, some people from Witchita Falls and some from Lubbock. I guess the lockout slowed travel plans.
29. Last note from me: the food at "Hooters" on the riverwalk isn't bad. Either that or I didn't notice it, if it was bad.
