Id love to hear from some of you guys that have been to many games over the years. Were you lucky enough to go to a amazing game or see something spectacular in person? What would you call the most memorable things you were fortunate enough to witness? When? What happened?
Id love to share but I have nothing remarkable.
Opening day - 1972 at Texas Stadium vs. Eagles. I got 4 tickets from my dad (through business associations). First game going without my family and first look at Texas Stadium. Three friends who were going with me all backed out Friday before the game - one sick, one in minor auto accident and one called on to work at the last minute - so I ended up with 3 free tickets. All were between 5 and 10 yard line, upper rows of lower section. Traded all 4 tickets to a scalper for 1 seat on 48 yard line about 25 rows up. Best seats I ever had at any major sporting event.
First play of the game (and the season) from Dallas 20 yard line, Morton (was year he took over from Staubach after he separated his shoulder) drops back and heaves a bomb toward Hayes who was streaking down the sideline closest to me. Hayes was wide open 7-10 yards behind the Eagles CB. Funny thing - as Morton released the ball the stadium fell dead silent - you could hear Hayes grunting as he ran full out. Eagles safety Bill Bradley was caught way out of position. He was angling toward Hayes from the hash marks where he was when the play started but his angle was so bad and Hayes was so fast that he would have ended up further behind Hayes than the CB was. It was so quiet you could hear Bradley screaming at Hayes as he ran - "Look out Bobby! You're going to drop it Bobby! Here I come Bobby! Watch out Bobby!".
Sure enough, the ball drops perfectly into Hayes hands in full stride just as he pulled even with me on the 48
yard line. He juggles it a couple of times and then drops it.
The whole stadium sounded like everyone had held their breath for two minutes and then exhaled all at once when Hayes dropped it. It was an extraordinary 10-15 seconds. Never heard or saw anything like it before or since.
Dallas won anyway 28-7 so I went home happy.
