It’s been a rough season thus far. Defense has been awful, and the offense has been anemic. It seems like it has become a yearly debate regarding these same issues, problems that money and draft picks haven’t been able to resolve.
It sucks.
I read Strums article about Cowboys fans being spoiled by their own memories. It’s somewhat true. However, those same memories are the reason we are here every week spending hours talking about, writing about, agonizing over and sometimes even celebrating Cowboys football. For better or worst we love this team.
We loved the Cowboys during the Quincy Carter era. We love the Cowboys when Jerry began the parade of washed up, has been and never will be QB’s. We especially loved the Cowboys when Romo first took over and we all collectively shared in the joy and excitement of a potential we hadn’t had for years. For many of us fans, that was the most exciting football in years; for other younger fans, that was the first taste of a credible team.
A lot of great memories seem to be lost because they’re over shadowed by the some painful defeats. For me, the memory that stands out more than others is that last game against the 49ers in Texas Stadium; TO, smoked the 9ers for like 200 yards, it was pretty good win.
Because most of my family are 49er fans, those games are always memorable for me, win or lose. The most agonizing lost for me will always be the NFC championship lost to the 49ers in 94. I was still pretty young, so I’d still get pretty emotional about the outcome of games, not to mention the crap I had to hear from all the 49er fans in my family.
Growing up with that 1990’s Cowboys Dynasty I remember being scared to death of Randall Cunningham and Reggie White and Clyde Simmons. Seemed like they killed Troy every time we played them. I argued till I was blue in the face that Emmitt was better than Barry Sanders and Troy was better than Steve Young. I thought Ken Norton Jr was a trader but was elated when Jerry signed Deion. There are so many great memories, like when Alvin Harpers sideline catch in the 92 championship game, or Emmitts 25 TD season. So many difficult deflating defeats, that lost to Elvis Grbac lead 49ers in 95, or that wildcard playoff game loss to the cardinals in 96. Or how about that lost to Washington when TO dropped a sure game winning TD, then the blocked field goal and subsequent game winning field goal by the Skins.
Cowboys fans may be spoiled by are memories; we may demand and complain that our favorite team has been .500 for 20 years. We know it could be worst. But so what? Like fans of other teams, the lows that we collectively experience are just as important as the highs. Those painful excruciating losses that that still sting are just as important to the fabric of our fandom as the exhilarating experience of championship teams a lot of us enjoyed in the 90’s. Those moments and memories make us fans; those moments and memories is why I watch on Sunday.
What moments, famous or infamous, do you guys remember that reinforces your love for this Team?
