Fear this year - what if our DBs were exposed by talent, not scheme

Sean Payton walked in last year and tore us a new one of course ...

Given that, I hope our front 7 were, and are, pretty dang good ... that it WASN'T Tuna's front-seven schemes that accounted for our collapse ... that might call into question our talent there (I hope not because so much is invested there ... )

... And that for the first 10 weeks or so, our DBs held up their end. BUT... I read on this board that the stats dudes give our DBs gifts - more than our share of dropped passes last year, we were a bit, statistically put, "lucky" ..

By that same report, Henry was better than we thought, Newman worse, man on man ... I won't bring up safeties ...

Then the report that Hamlin was unsigned because he was in a state of confusion mostly and he was to blame for lots of problems at Seattle. Hey, Holmgren ain't nobody's fool, they had a lot more film and knowledge of Hamlin than the Boys did when we signed him.

Sigh, I just wish we had some late round and UDFA guys - hopefuls at DB that stood out at San Antonio ... Reeves and Jones are what they are at this point ... Joey Thomas, Butler, Ball, nothing exciting I've heard about ... Courtney Brown, a project at safety - he's shown range but he can't tackle ...

I'm surprised that we didn't at least bring a bunch of UDFAs into camp at DB given we're thin there ... Bilbo sounds like he might have a chance at WR and catches everything but apparently he was a semi-failure at DB ...

I'm hoping tomorrow night that Ball, Thomas, Butler etc. bring it!

Our corners weren't the problem in coverage anyway. It was our LBs and safeties. Don't you remember TEs and FBs killing us time after time?

Give the secondary help with a pass rush and I think these guys will prove themselves more than capable

Wow, we haven't even played a pre-season game, and the chicken littles have started.

I wonder what's going to happen the first time a team scores.

One thing that will be interesting is seeing the Cowboys predominately playing man on man coverage. The secondary and the zone coverage’s just did not seem to go hand in hand as many times we would see blown assignments within the zone coverage’s.

I'm not arguing, I'm Stipulating You are correct in your assesment. Wouldn't that then fall to the coaching staff ? If you are using something and it is ineffective, Isn't change not only called for but Of the utmost importance. Or In Laymens terms, Da Dumb Bastid shoulda Let it go after Da 1st td.
It has become Popular sentiment to Blame coverage woes on Roy Williams but if Roy's weakness was Deep Coverage, (Not saying it is) Why Stay in a defensive Scheme That requires him to do just that?

One thing I am looking forward to this year is Hamlin and Watkins Freeing Roy up to play his game. That along with the Pass rush and Wade's agressive mindset on Defense. The secondary is not something I worry about at all. I guess we'll see a Preview Tonight. Those of you Lucky Bastids That get to see the Game that is.

My Kingdom for a tape of tonights Game. It's a small Legoland kingdom but a a kingdom all the same!!!!!!!!!!

A consistent pass rush will cure a lot defensive weaknesses we had last year.
Take the Denver Broncos for example...they have Champ Bailey who is considered the best cb in the game and pro-bowler John Lynch in thier secondary and they still ranked 21st in the league in pass defense. I don't care who you have in the secondary...if you can not generate an effective pass rush you will get burned.

Id also like to point out that while a lot of people say that Holmgren is not an idiot i do have to point out something on the matter. Holmgren is not an idiot when it comes to offense. The same cannot be said about him in reference to defense.

Wade Phillips is not an idiot when it comes to defense and he says he like Hamlins intelligence on the field. It wasnt Hamlin that was being benched last year, it was Boulware.

At least not until Detroit, when Kitna tore everyone apart. The "We can't cover" bug definitely made it's rounds last year.
