February 25, 1989: Jerry Jones buys the Cowboys

Since the Cowboys last SB win in 95 there’s only been 3 teams win 3 Super Bowls since, NE, Pittsburgh and KC. No doubt the last 30 years have been frustrating for the Cowboys but the odds that they would have had more success with another owner is very unlikely. It’s VERY difficult winning a SB. Since the Cowboys last SB win the Bills have had more success than the Cowboys but they haven’t been back to the SB since we beat them in 93. Does anyone honestly believe their fan base is less frustrated than ours because they’ve won more playoff games than the Cowboys the past 30 years and have been to a couple of conference title games?

New England is the only team with more SB wins than the Cowboys the past 36 years. Had our 3 championships not come within Jerry’s first 7 years and were more spread out, the fan base might not feel as frustrated.

The 3 championships weren’t worth the misery and embarrassment.

I’d of rather taken our chances with the other 2 great bids from Lakers owner Dr Jerry Buss and Mavericks original owner Donald Carter.

Some of you are really exaggerating. There’s only 3 other teams with 3 championships the past 36 years. NE has 4 SB wins over that period. Thinking or claiming we would have more championships with another owner is highly unlikely. That’s just being honest. SB wins don’t come around very often. Just look around the league. KC went 50 years before their next SB win. Miami hasn’t won a SB since their back to back championships in 73 and 74. Look at the frustration Buffalo and Detroit have endured. The biggest issue with the Cowboys is their lack of playoff success. Only 5 playoff wins since our last SB win is not acceptable. If the team was in contention more often making deep runs in the playoffs the fan base wouldn’t be so down.

You’re living in the moment. Regardless what’s happened the past 30 years it led to three Super Bowl wins in 4 years. The Cowboys were the team of the 90s. Had Jerry not bought the team the Cowboys last SB win might have been in 1977. Not trying to defend Jerry but it hasn’t been all bad with him.
I get that but who’s to say we wouldn’t have had five or six more by now if someone else had bought the team? 30 years is an eternity in the NFL and we’re no closer now than we were 30 years ago. And without Jimmy, we would have nothing to show for it under Jerry‘s reign of terror.

It’s easy to say we wouldn’t have that many SB wins considering the most SB wins by any team since 89 is 4 wins by NE because they had the goat at QB. You mentioned Jimmy and he would have never been the Cowboys HC had it not been for Jerry. Them being teammates at Arkansas led to Jimmy’s hire. Had Jimmy not been the coach there would have been no Herschel Walker trade. Some of you are living in a fantasy world believing it would’ve been a whole lot better without Jerry.

….young me thought this would last forever….

All the superbowls…playoff wins

…the sun has gone down

I give Jerry credit for hiring Jimmy and letting him mk all football decisions. I give Jerry all the credit in the world for the 29 year drought.

I’d argue it wasn’t worth selling our souls and the embarrassment which has followed.

And it’s entirely possible we could have had a more consistent respectable product and contender with other owners like Dr Jerry Buss of the Lakers and Mavericks original owner Donald Carter both of which had bids.

And like with previous era with only 2 Rings I’d of been much prouder of a more consistent contender and respected franchise.

Truth. Except Pittsburgh only won 2 - SB XL and XLIII.

Jerry is responsible for the successes and the failures but very few teams had the success the Cowboys did in the 90s. The Cowboys had one of the great dynasties. I argued with a fan a few years ago who said he would give up those three SB wins to have someone other than Jerry own the team. No fan in their right mind would do that. lol Believing the Cowboys could have won more than three SBs without Jerry and Jimmy is silly.

One fan in this thread said he would have rather taken his chances with another owner in 89 believing the Cowboys could have had more success. That’s all ridiculous talk from frustrated fans. Some act like winning a SB is easy. Philly lost their first SB in 1980 and it took 23 years for them to reach another one only to lose again. It took them 37 years to finally win a SB since their first SB loss in 1980.

It’s not just about winning Super Bowls. And no one should receive a pass for life. Landry didn’t . And Jethro shouldn’t .

We only won 2 Super Bowls in prior era but it was a much more respectable and I’d argue more consistent contender.

And there’s no reason to believe there couldn’t have been possibilities for similar type of ownership and success with other owners.

I’ve been a Diehard Cowboys fan since early 60’s. And given what we have seen since those early years with team Jimmy built I’d argue the rest of Jones era hasn’t been worth it. And it’s ruined whatever the initial years brought.

I’d of rather taken my chances with one of the other owners who bid on the Cowboys.

It’s like a marriage which has gone really bad.

Was the honeymoon great. Yes. But the agony and embarrassment for decades following wasn’t worth it.

I wish we had never gotten married despite how wonderful the honeymoon was.

It’s been such an aggravating frustrating waste of my Cowboys favorite pastime. I’ve never hated anyone more in sports.

And I represent how the Cowboys continue to be our favorite local franchise while our owner is the most hated sports personality in Dallas.

Tom was at the end of his storied career. I didn’t like the way the idiot handled it. Watching Jimmy systematically build the team through the draft and trades, he and his assistants implementing their systems, and the idiot taking a back seat were some great years. What a ride! I also enjoyed the ride through the 70s. Anyone who thinks this team is close…remotely close, needs psychiatric help. It needs to be blown up much like what we’re seeing….never mind.

A 29 year drought in winning a measly div playoff game is almost the worst in nfl history. Hell yeah we would have been better off if Jerry never bought the team. But I’m glad you’re so happy with the playoff results the past 29 seasons lol.

Had Jerry not bought the team the 90s might have been as bad as the late 80s. There would have been no Jimmy Johnson coaching the team and there would’ve been no Herschel Walker trade that brought us Emmitt Smith and helped turn the Cowboys into one of the great dynasties. The Cowboys would likely be stuck with the two Super Bowls they won in the 70s. No one is happy about what’s happened the last 29 years but those of us who are old enough, got to experience something very special in the 90s that many fan bases will never experience. You’re completely out of touch with reality if you honestly believe we would have more than three Super Bowl wins with another owner. We might have had a few more deep playoff runs, but no way would we have more than three Super Bowl wins. Dream on!
