February 25, 1989: Jerry Jones buys the Cowboys

Wow. Never thought I'd see anyone defend Jerry because of what he lucked in to over 30 years ago.

What are you guys upset about?!? It's only been three decades!!!

There’s not a team that’s won a SB where some luck wasn’t involved. Had NE never drafted Brady they would very have ZERO SB wins. Was Brady not some luck? The same with KC. Had they not traded up for Mahomes their last SB win would have been in 1969. Mahomes was a HUGE stroke of luck. A lot of right moves had to be made for the Cowboys to come back from 3-13 and 1-15 to winning three SBs in four years just a few years later. For some fans to act like Jerry buying the team was the worst thing that could have ever happened to the franchise is hilarious! One fan compared it to Peal Harbor…HAHA! There’s fans acting like those championships in the 90s were no big deal. Some must not have been around during those years. My only argument about Jerry is it hasn’t been all bad with him. We’re all frustrated with the last 29 years but there’s a lot of teams that have had a worse run than we have over that time period.

Had Jerry not bought the team the 90s might have been as bad as the late 80s. There would have been no Jimmy Johnson coaching the team and there would’ve been no Herschel Walker trade that brought us Emmitt Smith and helped turn the Cowboys into one of the great dynasties. The Cowboys would likely be stuck with the two Super Bowls they won in the 70s. No one is happy about what’s happened the last 29 years but those of us who are old enough, got to experience something very special in the 90s that many fan bases will never experience. You’re completely out of touch with reality if you honestly believe we would have more than three Super Bowl wins with another owner. We might have had a few more deep playoff runs, but no way would we have more than three Super Bowl wins. Dream on!
That's pure conjecture. If Staubach and his investors had bought the team, and they were in the same $$$ as Jerry, they would have fired their hc and GM every five years if the playoff results were not acceptable. AND most importantly, they would have placed winning at the top where it belongs which would have been a seismic shift over Jerry's micromanagement madness.

Would we have won 3 Super Bowls from 89 to now? Yeah, I think so and I think we'd have at least one more along some NFC championship appearances (remember those?).

I'd give a Super Bowl back if it meant we never knew Jerry. And who's to say if Jerry lives another 10+ years to add another decade to our three decade playoff drought? And then Stephen takes over for another decade of more of the same. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Why do you think Eagle's fans love Jerry so much?

Staubach was in no position to buy the team in 89 and you have no idea what he or anyone else would have done. He probably would have stayed with Landry. What I do know is Jerry was the only one who would have hired Jimmy and allowed him full control over personnel. That’s what led to the Cowboys becoming a dynasty. The last 29 years have been frustrating and disappointing but to pretend Jerry buying the Cowboys was the worst thing that could have ever happened to the franchise is completely ridiculous!

His purchase of the team led to one of the great dynasties and one of the top stadiums. The Cowboys are the most popular and richest organization and Jerry is in the Hall of Fame along with the HC he hired in 89. I’ve been critical of practically everything he’s done since Jimmy left but his moves were SPOT ON those first 7 years and I’m very thankful I was around to enjoy it. Sorry for those of you who missed out.

Glad you are happy with the 29 year drought. You are really the ideal Jerry fan. I assume you have your season tickets, new swag, and are ready for year 30 of playoff irrelevance.

Exactly right. Not a day passes without me thinking about those great teams.

And I have the VCR tapes to prove it.

I'm sure anyone younger than 30-35 regrets it. They were either too young to remember or weren't born when the Cowboys were relevant.

At least we have some memories even if they’re on VHS tapes. Some fans don’t have anything worth saving on VHS tapes.

You keep spinning the same BS.
