I've been having foot problems off an on for the past couple years, and though originally the problems I had were a product of walking too much, this last one has me concerned.

My left foot started acting up out of the blue. My big toe started feeling as if I had stubbed it. Within a matter of a day my whole foot was swollen, puffy, as if I had bruised the whole thing. I could not walk in any normal way, too painful. In 3-4 days I could not even see my ankle bone. The drug ibuprofin initially did not seem to help.

Ice packs helped. Doubling my ibuprofin dosage helped. But there isn't a cure yet and it's been over a week. What concerns me is that the classic cures for a bruised foot (ice, NSAIDs) don't yield the relief I'm accustomed to. So I'm looking at other possibilities.

One is the disease gout. AFAIK I have no elevated urea levels, but that isn't a requirement for gout. The onset of gout, redness in joints of the big toe, seems creepily like what I've experienced. There are diseases they call pseudogout .. apparently there are gout-like diseases out there.

Otay, if you've had gout, had a relative with gout, had a relative with foot problems that resembled gout.. I'm curious what your experiences have been like.

David.

Definitely worth a trip to the doc. My husband was diagnosed with gout after he was sure he'd broken his foot/toe, it hurt so bad. He'd switched to a more protein-oriented diet after finding out he was diabetic last year.

If it's gout, there's a very effective (and available cheaply as generic) drug for it (allopurinol)--it takes a week or two to fully work, but once you're on it, no more gout, and nothing really in the way of side effects or other interactions.

...gout to me.

Take a look at the link and see if you have some of the risk factors associated with the condition.

If you don't fall in any of those categories see a doctor and have a blood test for RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis).
