Felix Jones: Two questions

I have 2 questions about Felix Jones.

First question: Over these last 2 seasons he has had a hamstring injury, a toe injury, and now a knee injury. Does anyone know if these injuries are all happening on the same leg? And whether or not they are, are they all related in some way or another, indication perhaps that there is a larger "durability" problem with respect to his lower body?

Second question: Are Felix Jones' injuries related to his running style? Jones often runs like a circus-gymnist swings; he's so elusive and flexible that his body twists and turns in ways that other backs' bodies can't. On the positive side it's what makes him such an exciting and effective runner. But on the downside, is this the same reason he gets injured often - because by often being in an off-balanced position often he's more prone to falling or getting hit the wrong way?

Anyway, it's food for thought.

Eat up! :D

Not sure if its the same leg

I think the injuries could be related to his running style, possibly in that he seems to often be tackled from behind while running full speed. I'd imagine that this puts ligaments/etc at higher risk of injury versus a guy that gets taken down from a defender charging from in front.

was he ever injured in college? Sometimes one injury starts a chain of injuries: hurt a toe, change way you cut or run and pull a muscle, etc.

No, he has never been injury prone.

I don't know what his injury history was like in college but I can tell you this, all 3 injuries occurred on the same leg - left one.

Left hamstring, left toe and left knee

If its the same leg we could just have it cut off so it would stop getting it injured already!

I'm not a doctor but I think that sometimes when you injure one part of a body, other muscles try to compensate. So maybe when he pulled the hammy, the calf tried to do something which put pressure on the toe. All the rehab for those strained the PCL?

I'm kinda just spitballing, but it seems like I read something of that nature before.

Well, at least that would make it harder for defenders to tackle him, because there would be less of him to aim for when tackling. :)

Then that's indicative of a larger problem. It seems like one part of the leg keeps compensating for another, and as one part heals the other part goes. In the end it can leave him with a "shot" leg. Now that does not mean that it is impossible for him to recover from this latest injury; but if I'm on the training staff and I think it shold take, let's say, 2-4 weeks for him to recover, then I would err on the side of caution -- 4 weeks instead of 2 for recovery -- just because of the compounded nature of the multiple injuries.

The good news is his cells reproduce faster than they die at his young age plus he has the benefit of the hyperbaric chamber which will expedites the healing process. Honestly I don"t think it's his running style as some have pondered, look at Barry Sanders and the stress his ligaments were under, but rather just a case of a lot of bad luck in a short period of time, atleast I hope.
I prefer at this point to look at the silver lining, get healthy now young fella because a healthy FJ down the stretch will be a huge factor in how the story of the '09 Cowboys unfolds.

Or simply run with the other leg, right?

of course that'd probably drop his yards/carry average to something mortal like 5-6yds/carry LOL

CZ over analyzing again.

It's bad luck, and thats all. Hopefully it'll go away and infect some other team's guys.

He likely needs an offseason of serious squatting and cleaning and other basic lower body exercises.. Which he probably wasn't able to do this year due to the recovering toe.

Maybe with the toe it was related to the hamstring. He did hurt his toe while rehabbing, IIRC. The knee was just bad luck and a result of getting tackled from behind. His foot was pinned and the tackler's helmet was on the back of Felix's knee. There's a picture floating around somewhere...
