Few Thoughts On Cooper Trade

I was a feeling a bit left out since every one else has their own Cooper thread.

At first I thought this was a really bad trade and even though they clearly over paid, I am starting to realize why. Here are some of my thoughts, trying not to be a homer or a negative nancy.

- The NFL is changing. With all the rule changes, the way offenses attack the field is changing with it.

-Though it is great to have the big physical WR in the red zone, the need for big WRs is dwindling and lets face it those guys are hard to find.

- To me the passing game is more about speed and space then it ever has been, closer to what we see in college. You can't hit WRs like you use to be able to and teams are exploiting the middle of the field more because of it.

- If you look around the league outside of a few guys like Hopkins and Julio, the most productive WRs are more in line with the type of WR that Cooper is. Hill, Brown, Schuster-Smith, OBJ, Theilen, M. Thomas, Allen etc.... are all nuanced route runners who get in and out of their breaks and have good speed.

- I don't think there is a sure fire #1 WR in next year's draft and if there is it is doubtful he would last to where Dallas would be picking. Not to mention the first round has been riddled with first round busts at WR in recent years.

- Next year's FA wide receiver crop is a total dog. Golden Tate is probably the best WR but he is a slot guy, not close to a #1, he is 30 and it will take big bucks to sign him.

- The Raiders have been a dumpster fire the last 2 seasons, a fresh start in a different environment might be exactly what it takes to energize Cooper.

- I think Cooper and Gallup will compliment each other well and I think he will help in Gallup's development as they have a lot of similar qualities.

Hopefully he brings the volts this offense needs. Let the energy flow, please, football gods. ;)

AC DC?
Seriously, bloke?

#1 reason (90%) for bring Cooper is to give Dak a weapon for his (Dak's) audition as franchise QB. For next 8 weeks plus 1 yr is the time frame before Cowboys decide if he can be the franchise QB.

#2 reason (5%) is to keep Cowboys potentially in the race to make the playoffs. However, this is really not the main reason because when was the last time a 3-4 team with major deficiencies at OL, WR, TE and a questionable QB made a miraculous turn around for a SB run? Be realistic. You really think this team have a chance at SB? Seriously. Lipstick on a pig.
This #2 reason is the company line to the public and team. They certainly can't come out and tell Dak...."hey, we got you a #1 so if you can't prove yourself you are done as a Cowboy".

#3 reason (5%) is talent acquisition. Another company line regarding Cooper as the best WR compared to all the potential first rounder WRs coming out next yr. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't but paying 1st round price is overpaying by all standards. The only reason Dallas is willing to overpay is back to reason #1.

IMO. You may disagree.

This is clearly now an offensive league. Scoring and TDs are set to break NFL records. You no longer need that big physical receiver coz the has made getting separation fairly easy. Notice the games and see how wide open players are now. To be honest, this makes our inability to generate consistent offense even more frustrating. Hopefully, Coop will help change that...

Percentages are in disagreement but who cares. I agree with all three of your categories.
The third is the most nuanced of the three. They are the three bean soup.

Even if you hit on a WR in the draft it could take a season or 2 for them to develop and you are looking at relying on a rookie and 2nd year player to carry the team.

You choices are sticking with what you have, over paying a FA, none of which are exciting or #1 WRs or giving away a top draft pick for an experienced guy you like.

If you look at the the tape Cooper has a lot of upside, imo he is a borderline #1 WR to high end #2 and he has speed to stretch the field.

I think him and Gallup have the potential to be very good one, two punch, but we shall see.

'Speed is what matters' is what Al Davis thought in his final years .
Al always bought the quickest .
Didn't turn out so great for him .

True, but for Al it was all about a vertical passing game and I am not saying speed is the only factor what I am saying is the field is a bit more spread out horizontally.

In Al's days you have huge hitting safeties patrolling the middle of the field looking to knock people out. That rarely happens these days due to the new rules.
