It's way too early to grade our draft. We can think this is an A+ draft and in a couple of years most of these guys could be out of the league or with another team. Or we can think its an F and in a couple of years we still have most of these guys and they are a big part of the team. You can't grade drafts until you see their production on the field

Bobby Carpenter was not a reach. If Manny Lawson was only picked a few slots later, than Carpenter was going very soon too.

Besides, the Cardinals are always Super Bowl winners after their drafts. :laugh2:

Just like the Commanders are after the first week of Free Agency. :D

I say we grade this draft at the same time in 2009...
Well... there are two ways you can rate a draft, trick. The first is, as you say, to see how the players actually panned out (and you could make the case that this is the only "grading" that counts). However at some level, if you trust your scouting department, the next move is to get the players that you want at good value.

Let's take Carpenter, for instance. Whether or not he's still contributing in 2009 is not relevant here - you have to assume that your talent/scouting department did a good job. Now the point is to get him on your team at the right value. If he's a top 15 pick and you got him at 20, you graded well. If he would have fallen into the second round and you picked him at 15, you graded poorly.

The problem with that second path of logic is that everyone gives these prospects different grades. There is no ultimate grading system.

So while a guy may be a #15 on one board he could very well be a #25 on another. And each may have merit.

I quite frankly don't care who you drafted when... if they don't pan out then your draft sucks-- that's the bottom line. And I don't care if you drafted each one two rounds later than they were suppose to go.

Dallas Cowboys

Best Pick: Anthony Fasano, TE, Notre Dame. 2nd Rd(53)
Bit of a reach, but for a team that wants to run a two TE set, they needed an all around second option. This was their only solid Day One selection.

Worst Pick: Bobby Carpenter, LB, Ohio St. 1st Rd(18)
Carpenter just was not worth a Top 20 selection, and better players were available.

Second Day Steal: Pat Watkins, S, Florida St. Rd 5(138)
Watkins is a jumbo(6'5) free safety, and his centerfield skills are a perfect compliment to Roy Williams.

Overall: D+. The Cowboys just seemed to reach all over the place. Carpenter is a solid player, but not worth the pick they used on him. Fasano is solid, but was a slight reach himself. Jason Hatcher in the third round was a reach, and a project.

Take a look back on previous draft grades, the so called experts get it right about 50% of the time. If the NFL teams listened to guys like Mel Kyper, Mike Williams would have been the #1 overall last year.
