A fighter plane from World War II that crashed in the Sahara 70 years ago has been unearthed, and holds clues to a missing pilot.

The Telegraph reports that the intact American-made Curtiss Kittyhawk P-40, which had remained untouched since its crash landing in 1942, was discovered by a Polish oil company worker, Jakub Perka, who was exploring a remote region of the Western Desert in Egypt, about 200 miles from the nearest town.

It is believed that the airman, Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping, 24, initially survived the crash, because a parachute found at the scene looks to have been used as a makeshift shelter. But no trace of the body was found, leaving experts to believe the pilot walked away from the flight, then walked to his death in a hopeless attempt to find civilization.

I was just coming to post this. Did you see the video of the plane? The sand preserved it in amazing condition.

Just incredibly cool, love any WW2 coverage.

This reminds me of that twilight zone episode where the WW2 ghost crew of a B-25 waited until the one that bailed out on them found them.

Where that crash was is one of the most unknown places left in what is supposed to be already explored area; even the Bedoins had no reason to go into that area. So it is no surprise that 70 years later it was untouched.

I feel for that pilot- he must have known early on he was a walking dead man.

I wonder about the rest of the story and if the RAF has more information on the pilot and his flight.

There was something about that the plane should have never been in that area. There's nothing there!

I seem to recall they found a B-24,named the "Lady Be Good",about 20-30 years ago, under the same circumstances. If memory recalls,it was in very good shape, also. They never found the crew of it,either.

Correction from my previous...The "Lady Be Good" was found in the Lybian desert 54 years ago!
