Reviewed the 2nd game of season today. I focused strictly on the guys who will be on this team next season, and will have some kind of impact. Also to see where we need the most improvement for next season. I didn't want to write about the obvious things that we all already know about with these games.

Positives

Offense:

Tyron Smith: He did a very good job against these edge rushers. He consistently pushed them outside of Romo. They couldn't get the edge on him. I have him and Cook as the two best in this game. Much better job in this game then Giants game

Ryan Cook: Another solid game in pass protection. Several times he was 1 on 1 with the DT and help up very well. He definitely excels in pass protection. Does not get any push in the run game though.

Defense:

Lee and Carter: Made stops everywhere! They were excellent in this game. Consistently clogged the middle. Lee is SO quick to react. He made several stops running across the field. His reaction time is ridiculous. Carter was very impressive too. He is an excellent tackler.

Spencer: The pressure was non existent from anyone besides him and Ware. Spencer was excellent in sealing the edge several times while Wilson tried to run. Also impacted a few throws with his pressures. He had an excellent play where he chased down Lynch from about 10 yards back. He wasn't quite as impressive as Giants game, but still great. He was used a little too much in coverage for my liking especially with the pass rush as pathetic as it was.

Ware: What a difference a healthy Ware makes. In both games so far, he has been extremely active. He was excellent in the run game in this game. Made a few big stops in the backfield.

Lissemore: Not nearly the level that the others played at, but Lissemore was significantly better in this game then Giants game. He gets zero pass rush, but he did some nice things in run game. He clogged the middle several times on runs up the middle. Also did a nice job of coming quickly off blocks, and making stops in running game.

Brent: Wasn't quite as active as Giants game, but there was a reason. Unger and the LG for Seattle were consistently double and even triple teaming Brent. Even with that, Brent made several plays. Seattle was obviously trying to take Brent out of the equation the best they could. I couldn't help but think if he were around, and playing him at the 1 technique in between Spencer and Ratliff. How potentially dominating they could be.

Negatives

Offense:

Miscommunication on the Line: Seattle was consistently sending extra rushers. It wasn't so much that these lineman were getting beat by their guys individually, but rather they were not picking up the extra blitzers. Hard to know whose fault it was. This caused Romo to rush throws, a lot of times when he didn't need to.

Mackenzy Bernadeau: He wasn't nearly as bad as Giants game, but still was bad. Him, Free and Livings all had bad moments in this game. He gets beat a lot when he is on an island 1 on 1 vs the DT. Hard to say who was worse him or Free.

Defense:

Defensive Line: Lack of pass rush was obvious. Hatcher, Spears, and Coleman were disappointing in this game. None of them did anything in this game to warrant any positivity. Was especially surprised because Hatcher had such a good game against the Giants. He got mauled in the run game several times. If it weren't for couple flashes by Spencer and Ware, the pass rush was pathetic.

Missed Tackles: As bad as the Defensive Line was, there were many missed opportunities. I know Lynch isn't exactly the easiest guy to bring down, but there were SO many missed tackles. Seemed like everyone on the defense had blown opportunities to make a tackle in the backfield, including Spencer and Lee.

This game was clearly blown on fundamentals. Fumbling the football, special teams, missed tackles, and just pure sloppyness.

Dan,

Great work here.

Just an observation from my own analysis:

Spencer was forced into coverage by the formation the Seahawks used. I believe their gameplan was to get Spencer out of a "green" call (read his man and if he stays home he blitzes) and force him to cover.

PFF logged 15 coverage snaps in that game for him - 15 too many.

In any case though did you get that feeling in your stomach that Ryan was getting out-schemed?

As for the offense, they stunk it up too but some of that had to do with the Jason Witten drops. Also both WRs Bryant and Austin played scared against that secondary. That was painfully obvious at times.

On a side note...when you get to the Bears game, watch how they copied what the Seahawks did offensively to outscheme Ryan again.

Great job and I agree that Rob Ryan got outschemed bad in this game.

Nice write up. Agree with you on everything but more importantly on Brent. He was getting better as the season went along and being a disruptive force in the middle.

Also, can someone teach Costa and Cook the Fusion Dance and combine into a center who can pass protect and run block?

didn't the receivers, including a banged up Witten drop a lot of passes? The special teams stunk that game too. Particularly Felix

Definitely a lot of drops. Witten had a couple really big drops. I didn't want to focus on the obvious though in my evaluation

Yeah I would say Ryan was getting out coached. The misconception with this game was that the Seattle corners were jamming and out physicaling Austin and Bryant at the line of scrimmage. That wasn't the case at all. The seattle corners actually played a lot of zone. It was more the attitude they played with. That is just a flat out physical secondary! All their defensive backs hit hard and tackle. The second Austin or Bryant got the ball it was like 2 guys were ready to hit them

Frankly this game is what started me on the anti red ball road.

We had 11 days to get ready and did not look ready in any way shape or form. THAT is on the Coaching staff top to bottom.

Ryan was getting owned no doubt about it. But Red Ball was no better on Offense.

I ended up falling asleep during the game. I think it was a subconscious self-defense measure.

Another good thread. I love it when a plan comes together.

Looking forward to the next one. Thanks.

Great post. But I'm wondering why you include Brent in the analysis? He's obviously not going to be on this team - or any team aside from the one in the Longest Yard -- next year.

Yep. Seattle just basically played keep away the entire 2nd half, like the Globetrotters against the Washington Generals. They basically ate up 80% of the 2nd half with three drives. a) 8 plays, 90 yards, 5 minutes, TD. b) 12 plays, 88 yards, 7:35 minutes, TD. c) 14 plays (!!!), 36 yards, 4:30 minutes, run out the game clock. Part of that was due to do mass chaos on Coach D's punt return unit causing a penalty that gave Seattle the ball back on a turnover of downs.

The case against Ryan would be stronger if the score were 24-21 or even 21-17, but Dallas is not really in a position to win a game by scoring one TD as a total scoring output. Dallas basically lost 10-7 in the first quarter. The Commanders in the season finale used the same strategy as the Bears and the Seahawks, by playing back, baiting distance throw, and sending extra blitzers to outnumber the line. Dom Capers and Green Bay did the same thing on the 41-7 loss where Wade was fired and Clay Matthews was a 12th member of the Dallas offense on passing plays.

Bruce Carter really showed up this game...such an excellent tackler. When he wraps up, the ball carrier goes STRAIGHT to the ground 0 extra yardage...

Great point! Won't include him in future. I guess I was trying to be optimistic thinking there is a chance he could come back to this team
