After Monday night’s loss, I posed this question to Dallas Cowboys fans; which Dallas player had a good game or played better than you thought they would? And there were a few correct answers. Henry Melton, J.J. Wilcox, Jeremy Mincey, etc. But for the most part, this was a team loss. Dropped passes, fumbles, penalties, missed tackles. You name it, Dallas did it. But the most frustrating part of the game, for me at least, was the Cowboys inability to pass protect on fairly simple rushes.
First and foremost, give Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Jim Haslett some credit. He challenged the Cowboys offensive line and running backs to consistently pick up blitzes and stunts. Today, we are going to look at two of the sacks that the Commanders beat the Cowboys on. I could’ve picked a half of dozen of these plays, but they highlight a major theme for Dallas: communication.
There’s really two different ways to get a sack. The first being by beating a player one-on-one. This is was Cowboy fans were accustomed from seeing from DeMarcus Ware for years. Ware versus the team’s left tackle. But Washington didn’t beat Dallas by having better rushers than their blockers. They fooled them. Here’s the first sack I want to highlight. It occurred right before halftime as Dallas was trying to drive to score points:
This is a pretty simple stunt that Washington ran last night that gave Dallas problems. Ryan Kerrigan is lined up on the outside shoulder. Murray is locked into Brandon Merriweather on the edge, so this is a two main blocking assignment from Jeremy Parnell and Zack Martin blocking the left defensive end and the defensive tackle.
