Film Session Shows why Phil Mafah Could be Really Good in the NFL

deceptive speed is just another term for he is not really fast.
Or a term for someone that is faster than you think. At his size, there aren't a ton of 4.5 guys. Derrick Henry is one. Everyone is amazed at his speed on the field....but he was a 4.54 guy at the Combine. Henry might be similar....takes him a little bit to get to top speed, but once he is there he is pretty damned fast.

It's like watching the 100m...you have some guys that get out of the blocks in an instant and are up to their top speed, and then there are guys that start slow but the second half of the race they are flying at a higher top speed. Carl Lewis wasn't a great starter, but halfway down the track he was moving the fastest of any of his rivals and would catch and pass them.

You obviously aren't looking very hard at his runs if you don't understand the deceptive speed part. On several runs he runs away from defenses of big time schools. Is he a burner? No. But he isn't a slowpoke by any means.
This.

so I think he is a 4.7 guy, and you are saying he is faster than I think, so he is a 4.65 guy? still slow.

4.54 is not fast in the NFL for RBs....LBs and DEs run that fast. and they are all big too. Henry was very talented and if not for injuries would have been a top 20 pick.

and if Mafa is like a 100 yard sprinter and has a slow start, he is going to get tackled a lot close to LOS....from time to time he may find a open crease and then 10 yards down field pick up head of steam. I put more onus on the first 10 yards than 40 yard speed.

and what you said, can be said about every RB that got picked ahead of him. most of them clocked faster than he did.

but lets see how he does in preseason and regular season before everyone annoints him and compares him to Derrick Henry
