Considering only one starter played any time last night, the game wasnt as bad as I originally thought it was going to be. Various thoughts:
1) Bartel wont make our active roster...he is better than he was last yr, but he is still PS material. Because of the injuries, I bet they keep just 2 QB's and maybe add a 3rd guy after week one or two if somebody they like as a potential #2 for next yr becomes available.
2) I see now why Stephen Jones spoke highly of Tyson Smith. I dont think he makes our team, but he will definitely be on somebody's 53. If we arnt going to keep him, he's a guy we can definitely get a late rd draft pick for.
3) I'd keep T George over Rogers (average ST at best, no regular defense ability at all) or Walden (I just didnt see anything from him that opened my eyes, looks like a developmental PS guy)...George will definitely get claimed if we waive him thinking we can put him on the PS. 4-3 and 3-4 teams alike would jump on him as a backup
4) Jones says they arnt going to get another WR, though that might change if Hurd is definitely out 4-6 weeks. I wouldnt try to get by with Amendola or Jefferson as the 3rd WR until Austin or Hurd were healthy though. Even though he said differently, I do think they will trade for a WR before the end of the weekend. Wont be a huge name, but somebody that at least has some NFL experience.
5) For those that thought the Cowboys should cut Martellus Bennett and made a bad pick by taking him, time to shutup. He might not make an immediate impact, but my the end of this season and for the future, he gives us quite a weapon as a #2 TE
6) Looking back over the 4 preseason games as a whole, I think we played the same general formation and coverage set 80-90% of the time. Kinda makes me think the kitchen sink is coming out next sunday in Cleveland.
7) Nick Folk was just a tremendous draft pick.
8) I've said it virtually every week of preseason, but Jason Hatcher comtinues to be a huge disappointment IMO. I really thought he was going to be a major force for us this yr, but he has regressed. He has done nothing this preseason.
9) Deon Anderson is the best FB we've had since Moose was in his prime, bar none. He is a very good blocker and an exceptional outlet receiver. And not only does he catch everything, he can actually move with it once he does.
10) The backup OL on this team are not very good. Doug Free really had a bad game last night. He'll make the team, but I dont think he is half the player Adams is. If we lose Adams, it could be real bad for us. I think Marten might be in trouble for making the team. Getting Holland for a 2010 5th was a solid move. Berger looked a little betetr last night, but I think one of the backup OL (Proctor, Berger or Marten) might be gone. Wouldnt be surprised if another new backup OL is added either.
11) Alan Ball is one of 3 or 4 end of the roster guys that might get traded (alogn with above mentioned T Smith, T George). He is definitely more athletic than Oglesby, but Oglesby is usually closer to his guy than Ball is. Ball did have nice coverage on a deep ball and had a really nice ST play on a punt. If they decided to keep Ball, Oglesby is somebody they could definitely get a late rd pick for from a CB needy team.
12) Jones said they are looking into bringing Keith Davis back, though if the explanation for his release is true (that he is just mad because he wasnt going to start at safety, which he sux at) then I dont see why he'd come here. He isnt going to start or play on defense unless several guys got hurt. Courtney Brown has done nothing this preseason though and I havent seen him make a single play on ST, so maybe Davis takes his spot.
13) Felix Jones...he is gonna make a number of highlight film plays this year. Excellent draft pick.
14) Bobby Carpenter is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, but I do agree he doesnt look like a 1st rd pick out there. With Tyson Smith looking pretty good and displaying some upside, I wonder if Carpenter would have been traded had Burnett not got hurt. He does look like he'd fit a 4-3 OLB spot better than the 3-4, and when he was drafted I was one of those who thought he'd be a great fit in the 3-4.
15) I cant wait for next weekend.
