Ex-Miner receiver to sign as free agent with Cowboys
By Bret Bloomquist / El Paso Times
Joe West was fired up Monday afternoon when he learned he had tryouts with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints.
He was even more fired up Wednesday when he turned them down.
The UTEP receiver, a graduate of Garland Lakeview Centennial High School in the Metroplex, will sign a free-agent contract this morning with his hometown team, the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys flew West to Valley Ranch on Wednesday afternoon.
"Actually it did surprise me," said West, a Cowboy fan since he moved to the Metroplex 12 years ago. "I'm so grateful, I'm out of words. This is a great opportunity.
"This is a great feeling; there's no better opportunity, no better situation. I'm out of words."
Dallas didn't draft a receiver and seems to have a need to get younger at that position.
West, the second Miner receiver to sign a free-agent contract after Lorne Sam inked with Denver, ended his Miner career with 93 catches for 1,540 yards and 13 touchdowns. He started all 12 games in 2007, when he was second on the team in receiving yards (734) and receiving touchdowns (six) and third in catches (41).
West averaged a team-leading 17.9 yards per catch in 2007 and had two 100-yard games -- 153 yards versus Southern Miss and 101 yards at Texas Tech.
A loyal Miner alum and fan here. West isn't the fastest guy, but he's got pretty good hands.
Combine numbers:
4.57 in the 40-yard dash (faster than Manningham)
1.53 10-yard dash
2.62 20-yard dash
4.33 20-yard shuttle
11.66 60-yard shuttle (same as Eddie Royal)
6.96 three-cone drill
32-inch vertical jump (same as Manningham)
9'5" broad jump
Bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times. (same as Darius Raynaud, only UTEP's Lorne Sam and VT's Eddie Royal had more)
