I had to work yesterday so I didn't want to comment on the team's performance until I had seen the game in its' entirety.

I knew what the score was and I knew how the fan reactions were and I know that may of our concerns are valid, but:

I dont think the Cowboys played badly at all.

This was a game where I think we outcoached ourselves a little bit on the offensive side of the ball, and I think the defensive performance was pretty damn near flawless, minus a few missed tackles and third down conversions.

A few observations shine through from this ballgame:

Offensively:

3 Good RB's or not, we are a PASSING football team first and foremost. This Cowboys team must establish a rhythm passing game early and let the rest of the offense grow around it through 60 mins of football.

Romo has to be the focal point of the offense and fight through his hit or miss accuracy series to series for this team to score the points it can, and usually does- game to game.

I have seen this team move the football effectively on the ground, but to the detriment of the OVERALL points scored. This is what happened yesterday.

Barber looked good early. Then a fumble. We go back to the run and it comes up a bit short. Third down- stuffed. B

efore you know it the game is in the 2nd Qtr and Romo is completely out of synch in the passing game.

The passing game needs to be established FIRST for this team to have the success it can down the road.

Defensively:

Another strong performance... it's just unsettling that our breakdowns seem to concentrate around a certain #41 in your program. He's not playing "badly" per se... but he seems to keep our D on the field more than he has on the past with penalties or getting beaten or guessing wrong- which he did to Dave Campo's dismay (lol). BTW good job by Campo jumping his *** on the sidelines.

Scandrick I thought played fairly well in this ballgame despite his critcism. He seems to be in position on every down, but it's the quick hitters that hurt this team most, and they have and still center around the slot CB, whoever it is in coverage. If we can get even a notch better play from Orlando, we will be a dominant D.

Jenkins is a complete stud, and that illegal contact penalty was as bogus as it gets. IMO, Jenkins is looking like he will be a top 5 CB within a year's time. He's arrived and playing lights out even with a fairly painful injury to his arm.

Ratliff and Ware- seem to be in a bit of a slump. DeMarcus is active and gets pressure and may have had a few half sacks, but he's still not at his '08 level or even close. On some plays seems too easily pushed to the perimeter of the pocket.

Jay is fighting an injury I think, but I don't think he would tell anyone if he were limited a little bit. Loved Olshanksy's play in this game tho.

Great job overall by the D and again give credit to Wade- his unit continues to improve week to week by correcting mistakes quickly ballgame to ballgame.

I think we right the ship so to speak vs Oakland. I'm looking for a great offensive performance because I don't think we're as far off as some would have us believing.

The Defense might be good enough for a Super Bowl run right now if it gets help from the Offense again.

Thoughts?

Very nice post.

I think as long as our Defense is dominant and our STs steps up (i.e., makes gimmie FGs, etc.) which we are capable of doing, it will give our offense time to find its rythem.

One quote that RWilliams said after the game is that the offense is almost there (something to that effect). They just need to keep working on the execution. I think if they keep working at it, they will be able to actually add a new dimension to the offense.

We have the players on Offense, they just need to execute better.

That's something that can be worked on, fortunately for us.

I'm not sure Tony Romo is a big enough player to survive being the focal point of the offense for an entire season. He just gets too beat up and that has undoubtedly been a factor in our December woes.

Oddly enough, Romo was injured yesterday on a running play when he had to make a potential touchdown saving tackle following a Marion Barber fumble in the red zone that cost us points.

There's no question Jason Garrett prefers favoring the pass.

Days like yesterday or last year against the Bengals are rarities.

A nice mix is best.

I just don't want to shy away from the run if it's working (like week 2).

Fumbles and penalties can ruin either attack, so the biggest key remains cleaning up the errors and playing sound, focused football.

The star of the offense is definitely Romo but a balanced offense is best. If an offense can do both (run and pass) successfully, you put even the best defense on its heels.

And the only thing the OP missed was Brooking. The guy was all over the place against the Skins.

Brooking has been a monster this season ... I've been praising him all season, I just wanted to focus on a few areas where I don't think we're @ Grade A level currently.

Thanks, saved me some time reading the rest of that. I sure would like to see your definition of poor play.

It was probably better watching it knowing we won but we didnt have many glimmers of hope.

Its as bad as everyone says it is. At least from an offensive standpoint.

Defensively we were awesome.

We had no business winning that game but i'll take it.

So, you're saying the Commanders deserved to win?

By far the best overall game summary I've seen. Keen analysis.

...their kicker overall the Commanders did enough to keep their team in a position to win the game.

As Deion Sanders said the Cowboys are the most talented team in the NFC Least, but they play like the checks are already cashed from Jerry.

Given what this board has been gloating about in terms of the Commander misfortunes the past month we should be ashamed with the type of effort that was displayed for much of the game.

As a fan I for one cannot be confident in the ability of this team to reach its potential with the present coaching staff.

How many more years can we give to these guys? How much more talent can we amass.

Do we need a Pro Bowler at every position to ensure that we can place the Washington Commanders of the league in their place?

If it was a measure of deserving - the Cowboys certainly were not this past Sunday.

I'm much better looking than this fellow. And I'm very well aware it was a poor showing on the offensive side of the ball, but I wouldn't say that it was a putrid performance overall.

The defense is really giving me hope and buying time for the offense to get its act together again.
