After the Garrett hiring, the Cowboys really have stayed away from the young, hungry, up incoming coaches. They went the experienced route with retread coaches with similar results.

For years the Cowboys brought in basic schemes that emphasized high level execution to be successful. They were as vanilla as it gets and allowed the other teams to know exactly what was coming. Cowboys teams consistently self-destructed.

We saw in his 1st season the impact Klayton Adams has made. The Cowboys finally have a balanced attack and were one of the better rushing teams in the entire league last season. They have struggled badly ever since Zeke broke down in that area. I made it easier for teams to defend their offense knowing they couldn't run the football, not anymore!

CP is now installing a complex scheme moving away from the very basic Marinelli one. Defense has struggled with such a transition in the past, it is going to take time, but they will finally have a scheme that offenses need to figure out, not exactly know where the weak spots are.

Time will tell if this direction going with these young coordinators is successful or not, but at least they aren't trying to replicate something that worked 20 years ago.

I think it is going to make a huge difference this season.
Offenses will have to work hard to move the ball , and our defense will have them guessing.
On offense, I dont know, run more I hope, have to wait and see.

The Cowboys still had a negative rush EPA and their success rate only improved 4%.

Schemes are nice but they don't matter much if you don't have the talent to execute. Quinn's defenses were excellent when everyone was healthy and his defensive playbook was basically on an index card. At the end of the day, especially on defense, you have to have players who can defeat blockers and cover.

It was complex that someone had the thought to move away from all these old school schemes, even though some on here felt it would never happen

THIS is why I’m excited this year. Modern schemes for modern times.

They need to cash in more touchdowns in the redzone. 59% which was 16th in the league. For the offense we had this is TERRIBLE!!

I remember a couple of months ago having a discussion with a fellow zoner who shall go nameless, but he basically claimed that by default the Cowboys defense was going to suck this year because there is no way to turn in around in one year... Of course I could see his thought process and I respected it, but I tried to explain to him that it's very possible to turn a defense around in this modern era with an infusion of great coaching and players... We have all been guilty of eating the cheese, but as bad as we were last year, we have to get better one would expect... I actually believe the defense will be pretty good this year, I think CP is exactly what we needed at the right time, and I expect my mid season to see a very solid defense overall, just a gut feeling...

outside of one good road playoff performance, defense couldn’t stop any legitimate team. In those Quinn years we took advantage of a very weak division and struggled against all the playoff contenders.

Offensive has had the same struggles as they feasted on lower level competition and couldn’t compete against the top teams

This new staff has prioritized the trenches, the big weakness for years especially on defense. I am hopefully they are headed in a better direction then trying the same thing again hat never worked

We need to keep realistic expectations, not going to see a turnaround overnight it is going to take time and development

I’ve said from mid last season changing out the DC alone would’ve boosted the D ranking by quite a few slots IMO. Still standing by that.

Trenches football . CP coming out of Philly for this job came from a team that had one of the best OL in the league and a vet asst coach who had been there years out living the HC who came and went.

The DL effective aggressive invested in by the draft and well placed FA’s. This is the model to duplicate in Dallas .

..way long overdue, but Jerry finally went out of his way.

Younger does not necessarily mean better. I'm not buying the assumptions being made about this young staff. There is still something to be said for experience which this staff is lacking.

Not sure what assumptions you’re referring to. Experience didn’t do much for us defensively last year. It seems that a lot of the staff was considered quality hires in football circles. It’s not like they went with younger that has absolutely no experience.

...said the newbie with no experience. :muttley:. I believe there can be a correct mix of youth and experience. The question is, does the Cowboys coaching staff currently possess that correct mix?

Welcome aboard @BluMen. ;)

Even as a huge fan of the CP hire I agree completely. There are likely to be a ton of growing pains for the guy as well as the complete unknown of how he is as a play caller.

I kinda look at him similar to Kellen Moore, who produced fantastic overall results here, but clearly went through stretches of being slow to adjust and stretches of playcalling where the rythm simply wasnt there. There could be someone I'm missing but I don't see an obvious coach on the Cowboys for CP to go to and lean on who has called plays at this level before. I would have liked to have seen them give CP the keys to the car, but have a veteran retread in an advisory role as well.
